Is it possible to remove one of the licenses of Office 2007 Home? I did a web search and have not found anything. I guy is bringing me a laptop with a dying hard drive and I want to get the license off of it to put on a new laptop he is bringing. I am guessing the install program takes care of this?

You can reuse the license but you may run into an activation problem depending on how many times it's been reinstalled. Usually this can be handled with a phone call to MS.

Thanks Niccat11. My first step will be to uninstall and if I have to call MS, so be it.

Its not the key I need. That's easy to find and pull off, plus he has the software and the box. Its the install. He has used two of the three and since this laptop is dying, I want to get the install off before it goes completely belly up. I guess a call to MS may have taken care of it in any case.

Yes, I have used Google before. But 5 pages in, it had not answered my question.

I guess I misunderstood. When you said you wanted to pull off the license from Office 2007 Home, did you not mean that you needed to get the license key? Both SIW and Magical Jelly Bean would do that for you.

Your last post said you can get the key and you have the software, so what is "the install"?

Do you mean the install files? Settings and what not?

Simple way would be to copy what ever is in C:/program files/Office and place it back in the same place on the new image and also back up the registry and import it to the new machine. You would have to clean up any unused entries though or you could image the entire drive and put the image on a new drive and it's done all for you.

Office home includes 3 installs. My client has used two of those three, one of which is on a dying laptop which I have yet to receive. I have not used Office 2007, so I have not seen the install app and am not sure how it works. I'll cross that when he brings me his systems. What I want to do is remove the install instance from his dying laptop so it can be moved to his new one, thus leaving him still with one remaining install. I don't want to waste one on a dead hard drive. A call to MS may alleviate this, as I would guess that it connects to the internet to manage the installs, but I just hate waiting on hold... If there was a way to manage this myself, I would prefer that.

Ohhhh. I get it. "3 activations". Sorry I did not understand the terminology of "install". :)

A Google search including "activation" gave the link below as the first hit. [transfer ms office 2007 activation to replace hard drive]

See this posting by phoenix67. I have not verified success, but it certainly appears reasonable

ASSUMPTIONS MADE: you run windows xp or vista
If you already have the same version of Office 2007 with the same key on a different computer heres what you can do:

1. Install Office 2007 with CD or trial version (just dont type anything in the activation key box and click continue)

2. run "regedit" on the computer WITH OFFICE WORKING! by typing regedit in the run command or search it on your system
in the registry locate the directory:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Office/12.0

3. with the directory 12.0 HIGHLIGHTED click File --> Export and save as OFFICE.reg
4. copy this .reg file to a flash drive or by some other means to transfer the registry files to the other computer with Office unactivated.

5. On the computer with Office installed, but not activated simply locate the OFFICE.reg file and run it (double click).
6. WAH Lah!! you can now run ALL programs that came with OFFICE and they will pop up with a verification page or something of the like,
7. Click register ONINE, and your OFFICE version is now set to go on your computer again.

This is how I managed to keep Office working on all of my networked computers, as I lost my activation key long ago, and the activation key is encrypted in the registry files. I know there are a few more ways out there to do simular tasks, but this is by far the easiest, and for a user that is comfortable with windows registry. Hoped this helps either you or any other web-surfers in need of help with this topic.

Odd

You know, I have never used the term activation in 25 years of working on computers. I just looked at the box he brought over and yep, its on there! I have always referred to it as an install. HHhhmmmm, learned something new...

Anyhow, thanks for the tidbit.
