Can somebody recommend a firm in the UK that are reasonable for DC jack repairs?

We can do the plugin type ourselves, but have to pass on the soldered to motherboard type.

I'm thinking it would be a good thing if we could ship them out, but I'm wary of a lot of the firms advertising this service.

Thanks

My advice would be to invest in the kit to do it yourself (plenty of threads using search function that discuss the kit required, brands etc), in the meantime sub it out to a local shop and add your markup (or not and do for cost and upsell a tune-up for some profit?), thereby you keep getting the work as your prices are no more expensive, and you learn a new skill...!

Tried this in the past, invested in a hot air reflow machine but unfortunately I haven't got the skill or patience to use it very effectively. We had a lot of machines coming back or we'd damage something else on the motherboard. I would much prefer to farm it out. To be fair we don't get many DC jacks we can't fix ourselves, but it would be handy to know where we can send the odd one we do get.

Hi Stu, I use RMA Updates (ACI) for my dc repairs. They charge me £40 + vat.

They usually do the repairs within a day of receiving the machine, and also can arrange courier both ways, or you can arrange courier service yourself.

Don't you then pay couriers both ways Nige? I think that adds a lot to it making it not a viable solution.

I would be happy to offer my services for this. If you're interested in setting up some kind of arrangement, PM me. The same goes for anyone else requiring a soldering service in the UK.

Simmy on these forums does it.

SMG Computers.

Cheers for the recommendation :)

I pay courier fees yes Martyn. I usually use parcel2go for my courier, next day, is around £10.00 inc vat. When rma return them, its £12.00.

But would love to use simmy, in fact, simmy, you may be having one of mine come next week, if thats ok. I'll either pm you, or ring for details :)

We can also offer this repair

Best bet is to send the motherboard as this saves on weight

I usually do these repairs for £30 for other shops, £50 for customers walking In

I farm my DC jack repairs out to a great guy, who only charges me...... £25.00! Admittedly, I strip the laptop down, and just give him the motherboard. Usually same day repair as well.

Well if you can solder, most of the work in doing a DC Jack is stripping it down! Soldering itself is not that difficult, I used to be able to do it but I was never brilliant at it. I have soldered plenty of PCBs in my time but more often or not they never worked!

Fixed the odd dry joint on electrical items too, but with laptops everything is just too close together, you it has to be done with precision.

Soldering is easy. It's the desoldering and unclogging the holes that's the PITA. :)

We do all our own jacks and we even do some for a couple of other independent techs in the area. But damned if I'll be charging £20. I don't think so.

Thanks for the useful suggestions everybody.

The laptop which prompted this post has now been broken up for spares but I will be sure to consult this thread next time we get a DC jack for soldering.
