Have a customer who has just bought a 2nd hand PC, It had a fresh install of windows on it from whoever it was brought from, but on startup flashed up quite a lot of deleted files via checkdisk.

ANyway, I installed Office home and business 2013 on it using the customers key, and also registered the product to a newly created MS account for them.
Now whenever any office product is booted it shows a warning about office not being registered and will expire in 28 days with the usual option of installing a key, so click close/ignore fire up office go to account and it shows the same info, however you can click a some text that says show additional information and up pops the HOIme and business info with confirmation that it has been activated.

Go in to programs and features and there is only one office installed.
So I uninstalled home and business, reboot check that no office is showing as installed in programs and features and then proceed to reinstall only to have the same issue.

Office standard seems to include publisher, however that is definitely not installed on the pc.

Little confused about this tbh.

I have run into that type of thing a few times now. The "My Office" Click to run component in 10 seems to be a problem sometimes.

Same here. It was hammering the system drive relentlessly. Task manager showed a constant 100% usage until I neutered it.

Run the ospp.vbs script with /dstatus

This page is mainly about activation but it will give you the commands
https://www.apeswithcomputers.com/article/use-cscript-to-activate-office-2010-2013-2016

Ive had to do this before. Run the dstatus and take note of the last 5 of the keys. Yon might see multiple results. Keep their 2013 retail and unpkey the rest.

Also curious when and where they got their 2013 as its not sold anymore. Did they have it laying around?

decommissioning 2 pcs and had 2 new pcs. My job was data migration and setup so that the 2 new machines could be used in place of the old ones without interruption.
Usual rigmarole with them having no idea where the activation code or box was for the software.
Lucky for them the place that sold and installed the software for them 4/5 years ago kept a copy of their key on record, we certainly don't hold peoples office/windows keys for them.

This is why I much prefer businesses go through an actual Microsoft reseller for office.

I just pushed out email and O365 to about 35 users no keys to manage just create their account and go. They get a new PC we log out of the account and log them in on the new one.

I used to work for a company that insisted on buying the box version such a PITA
