Greetings,

I need to build a desktop for a relative and I want to price in RAID1 as an option. This is going to be a budget desktop as he is struggling in this economy and this computer is for his business.

I am trying to figure out which way to go with RAID1. I have tried on-board RAID 1, with the RAID being controlled by the MOBO; this was on an older MSI mobo and it eventually corrupted one of the drives. When I tried to rebuild the array I found that the problem was on the mobo so I was SOL with that RAID controller but I think I could still use the mobo as a normal, non RAID mobo.

So, I guess there are two options. One is to use a motherboard that offers RAID1 or I can go with a RAID controller card. From what I remember the controller cards offer a little more flexibility in that if I decide to move the HD's from one machine to another, all I have to do is remove the card and drives and put them in another machine while a mobo driven RAID I can not move the drives to another machine and keep the RAID.

I am thinking of using 2 500GB drives but I don't know what card to use with them. I hate asking anyone to look for me and pick out the options but I will admit that RAID controller card selection is a weak spot for me. I get confused between RAID controller cards (processes the info onboard, usually cost more), expansion cards (PCI card that adds more SATA or PATA ports). The reason I get confused is that even the cards that are just for expansion often say something about RAID on them.

If anyone could help me find my options for a few RAID cards (and MOBO's w/ RAID, if that is not asking too much) from the lowest end to middle of the road and in between (remember super budget here :( ). I would be GREATLY appreciative and would love to repay you if at all possible. I have been using Newegg as my hardware source so I guess that is where we could look (unless you know of somewhere better).

Well, I guess that is it. If anyone has any tips or suggestions with dealing with RAID I'd greatly appreciate it.

On another note, this desktop is not a "production" machine meaning if it goes down a production line or assembly line doesn't stop. He just needs good backup as his last external failed him and then carbonite failed him. If anyone has any other suggestions I would love to hear it. I have thought of doing a large external ESata drive (2TB) and having a full image of the original install on this, or figuring out how to make a "restore partition" as many of the manufacturers do. These may be a better solution than RAID, IDK what do you think?

Again, I thank you VERY MUCH for any help you can offer in this situation.

I have yet to find a situation where using RAID was a "good thing" for a home machine. It adds a high level of complexity to the configuration and doesn't really provide backup capability above what a good backup process can give. The cost increase (e.g. RAID-capable h/w or s/w, plus the cost of the add'l HD) doesn't justify it in most cases.

For servers with mission-critical systems that can not afford even a short outage, then yes, RAID is worth it. For the average home user, no.

If you really want to include RAID in a home PC, that's up to you. But for one where there are cost constraints, then all the more reason to omit RAID.

Just my 2 cents worth.
