I have a failed PSU that I'm replacing. It has 3 ratings though. It is powering two HD's and a CD drive.

Failed PSU ratings...
300 W overall
175 W Max (+5 v & 3.3 v)
268 W Max (+12 v)

I have a replacement that is rated as follows...
400 W overall
130 W (+5 v & 3.3 v max)
348 W (+12V1 & +12V2 max)

Will this replacement suffice?

It depends how old it is, if its an early P4 or PIII era they require more power on the 3.3 and 5v than modern systems. Modern systems need most the power on the 12v rail.

Yeah that's what I've heard... that the 12v rail is where most of the demand is needed, which makes this replacement more than suitable.

This is a newer PC. No Pentium 4.

This one has 2 hard drives. Don't HD's draw from the 3.3 and 5v?

Hard drives typically only use around 700ma at the most :). So two hard drives will draw under 2 amps. So it is not an issue.

I am very snobby about brands though, because some of the cheap ones simply lie about their specs. Some 400w PSUs can handle twice as much power as cheap 400w ones.

I used to always buy FSPs but my supplier has now sold out. For the sake of an extra £10-£15 I just buy Corsair and Coolermaster power supplies now. Their 430-450w ones can handle a lot more power than a cheap 700w and they have all the proper safety circuits.

These things weigh 3.5kg, and that is because they have good quality heatsinks and all the proper protection circuits.

This is a review of the 500w of the one you've just bought, it is not good :(

A perfect weapon of mass destruction

What all the technical jargon is saying is if you put anything like 400w into it will go up smoke taking the rest of the machine with it.

I fit these, and I know I can sleep at night knowing I haven't supplied a potential fire hazzard

The reason I am so careful is as you know I've been caught out before with these cheap things.

That one is $75. Are you sure that's the one?

This customer might like something up to $40.

Check out Ultra power supplies, you can get their basic for cheap and it works awesome, with a lifetime warranty to boot.

Link doesn't work. It is an a Gigabyte Elite 400w, it is basic, it doesn't have sleeving etc, but it is safe and is extremely unlikely to blow your computer up, the same goes for the FSPs if you can get one in budget.

I would rather use a 300w FSP than a 500w powercool any day because I know I can trust the specs of an FSP.

I recently bought a very nice CoolerMaster eXtreme Power Plus 500w PSU on sale for $38, but see it's now on sale for $30 at Canada Computer -- my favorite computer store. They have lots of choices for under $40 and have locations throughout Ontario. Not sure if they are out west but am willing to bet they are not in the US, given their name. :) Think I'd better go stock up!

for future proofing, I rather get higher rating PSU than 500W. I am also doubtful that there are available lower rating.
