Yeah not sure where this one falls under so move it if you got a better idea mods.

Now on to the topic I have a PS3 60GB that has died on me and I have tried several repair options found online but I have declared it dead and gotten a new 120GB Slim. I then find out the HDD from my 60GB, which had been upgraded to a 160GB, won't work in any other PS3 it seems the drives are encrypted to only the single unit. Now I don't mind that I can't use the HDD with out formating it but I do mind that 2 years worth of saved game files and downloads are gone. I have redownloaded everything but I still lost my saved game files. I only had 3 games that were not complete so not too big an issue but thats still hours of lost gameplay. I know Im rambling but I think you all know what Im after and that is a way to retrieve my files and move them to my new PS3. I can't really see a way to fix my PS3 60GB but it seems that would be required unless someone can find another way to do a PS3 data backup. So if anyone has any isdeas any tips any fixes let me know I will be keeping my 60GB around for a little while I think might end up selling it for cheap later.

you're right. All of the data on the HDD is encrypted unless you use the backup utility and even then, there is no guarantee. It depends on the game maker. For example, I can not copy my infamous save game from one user on my system to another.

your best bet is to run it through HDD Regen or SpinRite to fix the bad sectors so the PS3 can read them.

The HDD isn't the problem it is the PS3 itself that is broke it won't read any HDD it won't even boot.
