Programs only open with right click open

I have a laptop in for a Windows XP Pro SP3 OS repair. I have repaired almost everything wrong with it using D7, except two issues, but I think one is related to the other. The customer wants to refrain from doing a clean install if at all possible.

The main problem is that most of the program shortcuts will only open if you right click and select "open". Double clicking the icons or selecting them and pressing the "enter" key will not work. However, the programs work normally if you double click or select them and press the "enter" key on the actual executable itself.

The other problem is that if I run am running D7 and double click a shortcut or press the "enter" key after selecting it, the desktop foler opens up instead of the program associated to the shortcut running. Also, if I reboot the machine allowing D7 to run during boot time, the desktop folder opens as soon as the OS logs on.

One other problem I run into running D7's "KillEmAll" is that the DCOM crashes and shuts the system down within 60 seconds.

I am assuming this is a registry problem but have had no luck googling this problem in particular. Any and all help appreciated. Thanks.

Have you considered doing a repair install? I find that it fixes many issues.

I was thinking something like this would be awesome... as a scheduled task for your most awesome customers. :D

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.lnk]

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile]

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{00021401-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}]

I agree with the LNK file fix - never used it, but that sounds exactly like the problem.

Your KillEmAll issue isn't related, but it's obviously shutting down something important. If you run KillEmAll Debug Mode from the D7 main menu, it should ask you before ending EACH process. Do that, take it slow, and whenever ending a process triggers the shutdown/restart message, let me know what process it was that KEA terminated, and I can add it to the internal whitelist.

Sorry for the thread hijack if you consider this one...

But I updated to D7 v7.8.25 with the LNK file fixes included in the "Fix File Associations" function on both the Windows Repair and Malware pages.

Note that the .REG file from dougknox doesn't include a few particular values that exist in Win7 and 8 - granted it should work anyway, there are just a few things left out - D7 doesn't have this issue though and includes the whole she-bang.

EDIT: Sorry it took me so long to crank this out ;)

I have seen this twice before. Once this registry fix cured it Link File Fix the other time it took a non-destructive repair install. let me KNOW!

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you guys. This fix did the trick. However, I didn't simply import it into the registry, but went through it line by line comparing each to the existing keys. I found that the last portion containg all of the CLSID information was what was missing in the registry.
