Printing (only) PDF causes a fake paper jam

This was a couple of months ago and it still pops up in my thoughts now and then. I'll add that most of my calls are residential and I'm asked for receipts so rarely I've stopped carrying them with me, opting to mail them a PDF one later. It works.

I had a housecall for a customer, everything went fine, basic spring cleaning kind of call. Nothing major, etc. Among other things was a new, fancier printer installed with the latest, right-off-the-manufacturer's-site drivers. Test pages printed fine. (I forget the make/model but I think it was an HP)

That said, this fellow asked for a receipt and was still fine with me emailing it (repeat customer). A few days later, he emails me back saying that wen he tries to print it out the printer (not the software) claims there is a paper jam. With some questions and suggestions, it's ONLY with printing out PDFs, nothing else. Word and text docs printed fine. And, there was no actual jamming - just the message on the printer's screen.

I installed other PDF printers on my end and sent him 3 different receipts. All 'jammed'.
I had him try it with Adobe, Foxit and Sumatra as the reader. All 'jammed'.

Now, again, this was a couple of months ago so I can't go back to it. IT was the first time in a while that I'd been dead stumped and thought I'd see what ideas you guys could come up with as to possible causes.
