Printer won't print with new cartridge

I have a family member who changed the empty black cartridge on a Epson all in one. Now it will not print anything in black but the color works. The printer sat for a few months before the cartridge change. So I ran all the setup, alignment and cleanings but it still does not work. Anything else I can do before suggesting buying a new printer?

With Epson printer the print head is not part of the cartridge, although this does make the cost of refill cartridges cheaper, it does mean that the print heads are not replaced when you install a new cartridge. If the printer has been left a few months the ink will have dried in the print head, this can be very difficult to clear. You can buy special cleaning cartridges which are basically standard cartridges filled with cleaning solvent, I've also used a large hypodermic syringe with a short length of plastic tube attached and gently injected rubbing alcohol (isopropyl) directly into the print head.

If it's a basic printer, it might be cheaper to call it quits and buy a new one, they're dirt cheap these days.

Yes ink pump. I know for a fact that Brother ink jet printers have them, as I work on them. It pumps the ink out of the cartridge to the printhead. Epsons are very close in design. After labor its just cheaper to buy a new printer then replace them.

Epson all-in-one printers do not have ink pumps and neither do Brother personal inkjet printers. I think you're confusing commecial-grade continuous ink printers with thermal-transfer inkjet printers.
