So if you guys don't mind sharing your secrets (those of you who are #1 in google for "computer repair city, state") what are some good sites to get backlinks from? I know TN is good (hence the signature:)), but what are some other highly regarded sites that would be possible to get links from? Are local sites regarded more highly than others?

I'm running my business on a very limited budget so I've been focusing on cheap advertisement and the internet has yielded more customers than any other source. However, I'm struggling to get the #1 position (superpages has it ATM) on Google and Yahoo for "computer repair bozeman mt" and for some reason, I'm not even listed in the first two pages of bing.

I know that backlinks aren't the only aspect of SEO, and I've done my best to use keywords in my content, titles, and descriptions. If you could look at my site from an SEO standpoint and give me some pointers, and maybe direct me to some quality sites to get links from, it would be greatly appreciated.

God knows I'm no expert on this but I'm interested in discussing it anyway.

You seem to have done pretty well do get to that position anyway. Does number 1 mean a lot more calls? I wonder.

Sometimes I think it can be tough to kick the number one off the spot if they have been in business for a while. The guy who is number one for 3 of my key words is a web designer too, so clearly he can add links from all the sites he builds.

I think you'd be well-advised to use the available tools to analyse your competitors and see where they get their links from. Go get them too. Then if you can add some they don't have, you are in with a shot. Some directories and article sites appear to get counted, but with google it is hard to tell.

Someone advised me to think of your site as a series of landing pages for keywords, rather than a single entity with one goal. Anyone landing on that page from the search should get all they need on that page to call. E.g. you would have yoursite.com/some-keywords.htm with that page optimised. You go get deep links to that page to boost its rating - treating it as if it were a discrete site in its own right. Thinking about how I search for things, I think this is true and have added one for a specific town in my area which appears to work. So now I will be doing a landing page for each town and village and for other search terms that I'd like to get hits from. It's all very well being number 1 for 3 words but you miss the other searches. You know you cannot spread your keywords too thinly but the landing page concept addresses all that. Some people use subdomains in the same way. Not sure how that impacts things.

The guy from google was on the radio station the other day and the advice he gave was to change content regular as this informs googel and keeps it going up in the rankings. maybe put a news update on linking to some of the national stories?. I'm no expert in fact far from it but maybe try the register web site.

I've got to position 4 under "remote computer repair" (depending on the google server I'm connected to anyway!) and I haven't concentrated on backlinks at all. Infact TN is the only site I link from.

I would concentrate on getting the site spot on first;

  • Valid HTML/CSS
  • 100% Metatag Descriptions
  • Content is king - get loads of relevant and coherent content on it
  • Domain name, html file names, Title, H1, Image tags

This is VERY true. A good way to do this is to create a blog in a subdirectory, NOT a subdomain. It will look at the subdomain separately and therefore your main page won't get the respect that it deserves. Trust me, I made this mistake and now its too late to change it.

A few things that I noticed...
  1. You have NO Google Page Rank. You're not even a zero. Get backlinks from lots of different domains. Sadly, most blogs no longer count.
  2. You are located in the Google maps. This is important to get clients. =)
  3. Click here to view a report on your website and your competitors...
  4. Click here to view a report on my website versus you and your competitors...

I haven't been paying much attention to SEO lately and I saw my page Rank go from a 2 to a 1. I need to get working on that again!

Websites to frequent...

Thanks for that! My domain is pretty new and I know I have at least some inbound links. I'll definitely keep working on it. I'm going to make a section of my website for my clients with regularly updated content. However, I want this to be accessible only to my clients. Would it be a good idea to leave the content accessible to anyone (so google can see it) but only have the links to the content available once you log in?

Thanks to this site I now know just how bad my site is... I have a score of 7

Glad to help. :) Did you do a comparison of your site vs. your competitors? How well did they do?

Regarding the public/private content, I wouldn't waste the time on it. But if you have your heart set on it, here is what I would do.
  1. Create the public pages for Google to find and index.
  2. Copy them and put the ilnks in.
  3. Put the linked ones in a protected folder.
  4. Give your clients logins and passwords.
On my blog I give out plenty of free information. I've received many clients who told me that they chose me because of my blog. It made me seem as though I know what I'm doing and the free info gives them a sense of trust.

OK, I will give you a small secret for free.
Do you want literally hundreds of websites linking back to your website?
But of course you do.
These are the steps:
1. Contact a software programmer and ask him/her to write a small little utility (scrensavers are easy) for you, but you should have the copyright and the programmer should give up to the source code. In US this is "Work for hire" and you get all the rights over the software and it's source code. Make sure you give this piece of software for free (freeware).

2. Create a page on your website where you advertise this little utility, with download links, some FAQ, etc.

3. Purchase a one-month license for GSA Auto SoftSubmit: http://software.submission.gsa-online.de/
The price for 1 month is at the moment 46 US Dollars

4. Install the GSA Auto SoftSubmit, configure it and publish your little screensaver software to:
- almost 600 shareware/freeware sites
- thousands of directories and search engines
- thousands of press-release websites

it does not matter those websites are far away from your customers. This action does not target your customers directly, but indirectly by telling Google that your site is important enough to be on the first 10 results for your keywords (do your SEO if you want really good results)

Give it between 2 weeks and 3 months and you will be amazed with the results:
- page rank increase
- alexa ranking shooting up
- compete ranking shooting up
- quantcast ranking shooting up
- daily requests from other SEO to become link partners with you (keep an eye on the scammers)

P.S
What I have just told you now, is a closely guarded secret among the professional SEO's.
But do I care, no I don't give a damn, and I am not a traitor because I am not one of "THEM"
Why pay them thousands of dollars when you can do it yourself for a fraction of the price.
Have a look at http://www.rentacoder.com if you don't know a programmer.

You are the MAN!!! I've never though of anything like that before!

I just finished requesting the rentacoder app that I want and when its done, I think that most anybody on this system will want it too.

I'm excited! I can't wait to see this work!!!

The first attempt at getting the coder to do what I want fizzled so I have reposted it and I think the new guy really has a handle on what I want. I can't wait to show y'all!

I outsourced my backlinking about a week ago, and I'm now on p2 or 3 in Google and p1 in Yahoo and Bing for "computer consulting new york". I wasn't expecting these kind of results so quickly, but hey...

I just created my TN sig today, so I'm expecting some more movement soon.

I spent the last two months learning SEO on Internet Marketing forums, and this is hands-down the most creative tip I've seen yet. Brilliant.

I did this and it appeared I got OK results. But then after a month or so, Google dropped pretty much all of those links from Webmaster tools indicating they no longer are counting them for my site.
