I am working on my own pet project, building a network intrusion detection system. My router is pretty simple and doesn't have port mirroring as I need to mirror all traffic to my raspberry pie to filter traffic and check headers in the packets.

I plan to order a managed switch that has this feature and plug it into the router. I'm wonder if this will work as I think it will? Will this monitor WIFI traffic?

I'm showing when you set it up, you have to tell what ports you want to be mirrored to what port, will all Ethernet connections need to be in the switch?

I'm wondering if I want to get the switch or maybe just upgrade my router to something that has port forwarding if I end up having to plug everything into the switch.

Mirroring is port based. Whether it's copper or wireless is irrelevant. Recently I've been playing around with this with a spare HP Procurve 2620-48. The recorder is a desktop running Kali. 500gb drive so I don't have to worry about running out of space for files. That switch is an L3 if I remember correctly but I think you can do this on a lot of L2's.

So should be good with that switch, will have to just give it a try and see what happens, only $30.
