Hi there,
I'm working on a pc that was infected with virus. I have removed the virus and some spyware with:
SuperAntispyware
Norton 360 scan

When I rebooted, I got "rundll error loading c:\windows\wsabmsdl.dll" message. I have internet connection but I can't run all the browsers. they simply will not start.
I can run other apps such as Excel.

Finally I ran Malwarebyte and it found a few infections and asked me to reboot to remove everything.

When I rebooted the pc it kept rebooting itself. When the reboot cycles starts I see blue screen flashing quickly and then it rests on start up modes but if I choose any start up mode, it keeps rebooting. When it reboots the hard drive make cranking noise.

The system is XP home premium Sp3 but there is no CD for it. The pc has some important files on it which I need to recover.

I'm stuck and any help would be appreciated.
Thank you in advance

Ok, well lets see here, Have you tried booting into safe mode? If so where does it restart at?

When it restarts what screen are you looking at? Does it ever get to the desktop or not?

Have you tried booting into a PE?

The bluescreen is it a BSOD or just blue??

If you can get a command prompt up run a sfc /scannow to see if that will fix it.
Can you tell us what you have done as far as Diagnostics so far?
I mean really, what diagnostics have you done? We don't need to be guessing at stuff if you have already done it.

Before I do any of that I would get an image of the drive and the customers data if it sounds like though the drive could be failing. You customers data is the most important detail here not, the system rebooting.

+1 for PC Medics. Your post reads like an end user who is panicking. I realize your not an end user, but you need to include more detail, and do the leg work first.

You could also disable restart on BSOD giving you chance to read the error.

Yes do get an Image before you do anything else (I always get one before removing a virus at the shop, just in case I need it....... never have but just in case). So I really didn't think to tell him that sorry.......

So yes do get an Image of the Drive to save your customers data.........

+1 I did start to put this but didn't want to appear be hard nosed :p;)

To the OP, as suggested getting the data off is paramount from your description. Image the drive and work on the image for your data then go back to the problem(s).

Thank you all for your help. I really appreciate your input. It is close to 4am in my area so I went to bed briefly and realized for some of you it is day light.

By the way Rick - I just don't want to comment on your attitude because the main reason this forum exists is for people to ask questions and for those care to help. If I know everything as you sounded you do, there is no need for me to ask for assistance here.

Professional folks never put down others because putting people down is a sign of weakness or ignorance. If we want to promote professional image for PC repair folks respecting one another is the fist step. We should work on improving not only pc repair skills but also communication skills plus positive heart.

I admit I'm not a computer repair "expert" but 15 years of IT project professional. That being said here is what I did:

This pc start having internet access problem, then user couldn't access her email. One thing let to another. The user finally contacted me.
The first thing I did was check network setting and restored internet connection. Then I realized the connection was intermittent. I.E stopped responding. I then scanned the system in safe mode as I mentioned above.

I agree saving user data is a priority and that is my next move. But the problem is even if I choose safe mode, normal start, safe mode with network the system will not boot. It keeps looping.

I'm working on restoring the registry to before the I started scanning using UBCdwin.

All that aside....

Get the back up done asap. Whilst you have the drive slaved, find the malwarebytes logs and have a look at what regisitry entries\files were removed so that you can then replace them if needed with legitimate copies from an install CD.

Also, stop the system from restarting when a BSOD occurs. Press F8 as though you are going to start the system in safe mode, and select 'Disable automatic restart', it will give you time to write the error down.

If you can't boot into Windows normally or in safe mode, you can't run sfc /scannow. It doesn't work from the Recovery console (just so you are aware).

One more thing? XP home premium Sp3 ?? I take it you mean XP Home SP3.

This forum exists for Computer Repair Professionals to ask questions of each other. As a fifteen year professional person, would you appreciate me, as a non professional, barging into your career field and demeaning it's value by attempting to practice your profession? As it is, you've taken income from someone who may have spent as many, if not more years than you, perfecting HIS craft.

Do what you do best, and please let us do the same.

Rick

Rick,
You don't have to help me or any other person on this forum. Your behavior actually encouraging me to continue learning and improving my pc skills. If your intention on this forum is to keep new or "un professional" tech quys out, it is too late. If not on this forum, they can get help other sites. Have you read forum's rules. I don't think Bryce appreciate your behavior.

No computer tech I know, know everything right after he/she finishes her certification. Everyone gets experience in real world including yourself.

It it takes me to lose my hair to get your help. Please don't bother.
cheers

To be fair, you have no idea what Bryce thinks. Feel free to report the offending posts and if he deems it to be against forum rules, he (or another mod) will handle it.

That being said, yes this forum exists to provide help to other computer repair technicians. However, That's not a license to post any and every question you have without first researching the issue and making some educated guess. If it was, then this forum would be filled with posts such containing just I got this error message, what's it mean? and This computer isn't powering up, why not?

If you want to be taken seriously on this forum, than make some effort to resolve the issue yourself. At this point, all we can conclude from your post is you received an error message on boot, ran some end-user scanners, and now the computer won't boot. Nowhere did you indicate you've done any research on the issue, or the error message. If you have, then say what you've done. That way, the people that are interested in helping don't have to start from square one.

"Disable Automatic Restart" appears on the same screen as "Safe Mode".

I've had end-users contact me telling me that they've disabled it and gotten ___ error code so now what? If end-users can find it themselves (granted, probably with the help of Google), shouldn't even a rookie tech be expected to do that much for themselves?

I don't think anyone's being elitist if they have such minimal expectations of someone here. There are certain things that a tech of any level should not need to be told how to do.

My intention is not to keep newbies out, but certainly to increase the professionalism of my craft.

An example of professionalism: Take your first sentence above. Before typing it, did you bother to click on my name, and take a look at some of the posts I've made? I've made quite a few, and most were to help other techs. If you didn't do that before typing, how "professional" were you?

If you are not a tech, then how "professional" were you by looking for assistance in a forum reserved for techs?

If you are a tech, then please show us a more professional side than you have so far.

As for me, the only certs I have are from the "School of Hard Knocks." However, I have been doing this in a consumer environment for close to twenty years now, and have been successful both ethically and financially.

Rick

I strongly believe each of us has a good intention to help others. I apologize if my comments offended some members of this forum.May be I was frustrated and wrote or said things that some of you didn't expected to see.

I am happy to report that I have successfully solved the issue.
- I manged to boot to previous state
- found original xp cd and ran sfc /scannow to restore the registry file that was deleted accidentally (Malwarebytes scan)

Your generous support really helped me. Thank you all
