My wife's an amateur photographer with about 100GB in her Photos library sitting on a Synology NAS. I recently purchased a Qnap TS-253Be and copied everything over. During the process, several files required Administrative permission which I gave, yet they failed to copy and I eventually skipped them.

When I try to open the library on the Qnap I get a message saying it's in use by another program. Jumped through the hoops I could find online including repairing the library. However, because the library on the Qnap has never been opened it attempts to repair the library on the Synology. It's fine, so I don't want to fool with it.

Ideally, I'd find a PC alternative with similar functionality for importing, manipulation, and library storage on a NAS. Until then, I would like to get the library properly moved to the Qnap so I can retire the Synology.

The message I keep getting is that I don't have the right permissions to move the file. I've looked everywhere I can think of and all permissions appear to be fine. I've tried with both PC & Mac and get the same thing. Checked the Synology where the file rests and see no reason I shouldn't be able to move it.

What, no Linux? Linux doesn't care much about Windows permissions.
Yeah, I have a Linux box available. Sits in the corner most of the time. Nearly everything I do is PC based, except for the pictures which I started back in 2009 using iPhoto on a Mac mini. I want to be able to import RAW files from an SD card and keep the library on the NAS. Photos does this fairly simply until I try to move the library. The folder containing the "Masters" I can move wherever I want. Finding a PC-based photo editing application that does this isn't as easy as it seems.

Yeah, I have a Linux box available. Sits in the corner most of the time.

My Linux boxes get used quite a bit. Any time a HDD won't image or clone it gets but on a Linux machine for cloning with ddrescue before recovery. I also use gparted quite bit on drives that have stubborn Windows partitions I want gone.

Dove into the folder permissions on the Synology and it's now copying the library over to the Qnap. Once it completes I'll make sure I can open the library and if so, I'll consider this issue closed. The message kept pointing to permissions, which is something I don't always see when I'm looking at them. I eventually figure it out, sometimes with help.

Now, I'm considering what I might do with the Synology in its retirement. The drives are fine, though the NAS is old. Maybe use it as a redundant backup for the Qnap?

I have nothing against Linux and do use it for various things occasionally. It's just not my daily driver.
