Just had an email from PayPal saying UK customers can purchase their
PayPal Here - Portable Card Reader for £99.00 no monthly fees and transaction fees of 2.75%.

I've never seen that stand-alone paypal reader. I've seen the dongle that goes into iphones and such. I'm gonna see if I can get that thing here in the states.

I think it's because in the USA cards are still swiped? iZettle brought out the swipe version first but VISA refused to go along with it, making VISA payments a complicated procedure involving the customer using the internet.
There was a lot of pressure on iZettle to bring out a Chip and Pin reader to comply with what is now standard here in the UK. Of course, having a C&P reader, attached to your phone or iPad is not going to be practical so their answer was the Bluetooth reader like PayPal now has. The reader looks like it can swipe cards too though but I've never tried it.

Yes we are behind the times. I wound't mind a reader like that here in the US though.

That is pretty slick. Paypal Canada still doesn't even have a swiper available (though Square sent me three).

I spoke to PayPal today, and they confirmed that the reason that we have to pay, is because of the technology in the European/UK version - Chip & Pin and Bluetooth.

They also advised that you could buy one of the PayPal Now readers from Apple stores in the UK, but instead of £99.00, Apple stores charge £99.95. Other than that, I was advised to download the App from either the Apple AppStore, or Google Play, and you could do an in-app purchase, with a 4 to 5 day delivery.

I looked into the paypal reader so I went to the website.

LOTS of angry people who say paypal has a 30 day "transaction period" whereby you cannot access any transactions during this period.

QUOTE
Same old paypal! Signed up, took x 2 transactions totalling £1700. without warning they have held the money for 30 days!!!!!!! have been using paypal for business for over 5 years & have proccessed over £300.000 during this time. Diabolical treatment. How on earth is a small company meant to survive while they withold payments for so long, whilst they cream the interest. sort it out Paypal, your poor reputation is preceeding you once again!!!

Also the transaction fees are a little misleading.

QUOTE.
" * The PayPal Chip and PIN card reader is subject to a one-off payment of £99 (including VAT and free delivery) and then a 2.75% transaction fee for every payment you accept with Chip and PIN cards and/or PayPal Check in. A transaction fee of 3.40% plus 20 pence is charged for card payments made by swiping the magnetic stripe or manually keying in the card details. These fees are domestic transactions only, additional charges apply for cross border transactions.

Looking closer at Izettle now.

I read the same comments last week Bertie and it put me right off. If any funds are withheld for 30 days if it is a lot e.g for a computer that could make me near bankrupt.

I have the Intuit Pay device no monthly fee and 2.75% on transactions.
The reader was on offer via Staples for £49. I have used it a few times and get paid within 3-4 days, no problems at all so far.

I think a lot of places are doing them now, including Santander and various other ones

I have to admit, that is a pretty nice looking device. Much better than the block we Yankees are stuck with. :) I think it would look much more professional to have such a device. I know you guys NEED it, I want it. It looks good.

it izettle that santander have teamed up with. £50 cashback when you first use it if you have a santander account.

Well, that's settled (zettled ?) the argument for me, seeing as I use Santander for my business account.

I initially chose Santander because of it's lack of bank charges, so that's it.
