hi

i generally deal with bank transfer, paypal or cash. however, when i'm out and about, i get asked about card payments and when i do the annual local fete which is very good, i have missed out on selling a laptop or items as i can't do cards and the 'ill withdraw cash and be back later' never works.

is it time to get a card reader or paypal go? i don't want to 'rent' a system of pay high fees.

i suppose i need the flexibility and when i get asked at fairs they always add a small % for fees if paying by card.

is that acceptable to do?

I use SumUp - does chip&pin and contactless and they pay out in 3 days. £50 for the reader (though they sometimes have sales) and 1.9% per transaction.

I don't add a card fee to my sales price but sometimes offer a discount for cash (effectively the same thing if you've priced things correctly but customers seem to prefer it!).

I use Izettle for cards and I don't add a card fee but then I have only used it once since I got it. You are allowed to add a fee and from memory, but please get this checked out, you cannot profit from the fee so it can only match what you are charged.

that looks good. only £29 for the reader to.

does it work well in the real world? do you have a receipt machine and does contactless work well?

my issue i have is bad phone signals.

Not sure which of us you're asking as both are £29 at the moment, but I've found the SumUp reader is fast to start up and to process transactions, contactless even faster of course. I just hand write receipts the same as for any transaction. You need 3G/4G or wifi. If there's no 3G/4G at customers' locations I just ask to join their wifi, never had a problem.

many thanks. i think i'll get a sum up machine. cheaper than paypal and izettle - i don't know how much business i'll do, but seems good.

Everyone seems to get hung up on the card reader. It gets lost, broken and many don't like it. Remember - Many apps (I use QuickBooks with its payment app) allow a simple picture of the credit card and OCRs the numbers for you automatically. It shows the card was present for the transaction so the rates are usually the same as the swipe. No dongle to find, get plugged in, swiped, etc.....

I had one of these machines for a year and never used it. People either paid cash, cheque or, with business clients, bank transfer. Never had anyone even ask about paying by CC.

No one ever asks me either - but that's because hardly anyone expects me to be able to process cards on the spot. Maybe it's because I'm a mobile tech, not a store.

If they offer cash, I gladly take it.

If they offer a cheque, I say "No need to write a cheque, I can take payment by card". They're usually mightily impressed. I get a guaranteed payment and no need to visit the bank to pay in.

If they offer a bank transfer I refuse it and ask for card payment. Been stiffed a few times over the years by people who "promised" to make a bank transfer later. Never again.

Not accepting credit cards these days is like not having a website. Still, I get burned sometimes with chargebacks from people that don't deserve their money back. But if I accepted nothing but cash I'd probably lose 10% to 20% of my business. So is it worth the card fees? Yes.

Thumbs up for the Sumup I use that aswell. Customers think its great. It's a set fee so no working out if its credit or debit card etc. customrer service helpful. I've told people the price of jobs before gone on site and had them say of sorry I only have this much cash. I've then said its ok I take card and theyve then paid in full.

Just advertise you do it if you do start using one

I use PayPal Here. One of the benefits is that the payment is available to withdraw from my PayPal account immediately.

Sigh, I really need to get my team to start accept credit cards - we are still very much a cash and cheque place. Any one knows what works well in Asia?
