The wife of my Dr. client where I installed 4 of these (in their home) a couple of weeks ago has expressed growing dislike for the stark white of the units and wants to a) dim or shut off the signal lights and b) paint them to match the walls where they are mounted.

I see in the Ubiquiti forums that this appears to be ok as long as you use a plastic paint like Krylon Fusion, and it will definitely void the warranty.

As an alternative to voiding the warranty, what about covering them with something. Maybe a box with a fabric front that matches the wall color? Has anyone done anything like this?

You can turn the light/s off in the Unifi Controller.

Also, you can put fabric over the covers if you wish with no degradation to the signal. Just don't use any metallic fabric nor leather or vinyl, etc.

I used flannel for a dentists office on an AP Pro and it works perfectly fine. Be sparse on the spray contact cement though and only use 3M spray adhesive.

I spray-painted (Rustoleam) a few flat black. You can still see them glow a bit - heh. Not sure a few mils thickness in paint would bother the signal much.

I think this would void the warranty also. I'm thinking of a little shower-cap looking thing with elastic that would just slip over the face. I'm not going to do this, but I will offer it as a solution if they are handy with a sewing machine. I wonder if this might make them run hot, though.

Just curious, why not leather or vinyl?

Replace with the newer NanoHD Unifis and get the marbled/wood/camo skins that UBNT will be selling shortly

Yeah, it says (optional custom skins (sold separately). That gives me hope that you will be actually able buy them separately, and maybe they will offer them in sizes for all of the products. Seems like an obvious thing, I'm surprised they haven't done this before.

From what I have heard the unifi warranty process is a total pain. Never had to go through it but have talked to a few techs that have and they say they just build into the cost of the job some overhead for replacement.

An ap dies it goes in the garbage and a new one goes in. Wouldn't worry to much about the warranty.

I would however get the customer to sign something stating they are aware it voids the warranty.

This right here is the truth. I tried a warranty once and only once on an AP Pro. Never going to do that again. I did get a new one, but it took 3 weeks. I just snatched one out my stockroom and took it to the business and popped it in free of charge and billed to configured it - labor does not come with parts for the warranty over 30 days. But they did tip me as well with a nice rib-eye for lunch as they are a restaurant. :D

Now as you said, I just bake in a replacement cost percentage - not the entire amount though. But, the AP Pros I have (8 left) only cost me at that time $134/ea versus the now $170 and I sold them at $199. But now since the price to buy jumped, so will my remaining stock.

Because it is a PITA to install unless you use a heat gun, which plastic and heat dont mix.

The reason I said 3M spray adhesive is that IF you had an issue where you needed to warranty it, you can easily peel off the fabric and use 70% alcohol to remove the adhesive residue of which 90% comes off with the fabric.
