I have a client who's laptop (win 8.1) is not updating the inbox for an imap account within outlook 2013. Account used to be connected to outlook.com, since changed to standard email hosting. Since it's an imap account, the mailbox is an ost file. Just as this prior thread the inbox isn't updating. The client can receive messages via her phone fine. Messages received from another mailbox within outlook receive fine, just not the imap account.

What I've done:
  • disabled all outlook addin/plugins
  • performed quick repair
  • checked for other software conflicts
  • verified windows updates/conflicts
  • verified no issues at host
I've sent several test messages and they do not receive on the imap account. At one point they all received some 14 hours later (had system for a few days). Since my research has shown several others have had this same issue around the net, I'm close to recommending moving to something such as google apps, unless of course anyone has another solution to this problem?

Have you uninstalled/reinstalled Office?

Have a look here too:

It seems a number of people are indeed having problems with this, but I'm not seeing much of a response from MS at this point.

Although I will say that an Exchange account might be a more satisfying solution, or perhaps Google Apps with their sync tool. Your client might like having calendars and contacts sync up with their mobile devices. One of mine had been using iTunes to sync her calendars, Apple or MS or both broke that with the latest version of whatever whoever is responsible for, yada yada yada. She had Google Apps, so I set her iPhone up on Exchange and changed Outlook to use Google's sync tool. All's well so far.

Test a new profile, allow email to download and synch. Be sure all filters applied are cleared. Be sure port settings are correct. So many little things, but a new profile to test is where I would start.

Thanks Lisa, I thought about a new profile but remembered it didn't work that great, that was years ago though. I've just created a new profile, and new emails came right through - I'll test a bit longer to ensure it holds, the import the stuff from the other profile.

No freemontpc, didn't do a reinstall, just quick repair as stated. If it doesn't hold I'm sticking toward Google apps.

I don't use making a new profile a top troubleshooting tactic, but sometimes it works to get a fresh download. I hate making new profiles because of all the settings and "aftercare' that comes along with it...

My autofilll doesn't work...ugh
My this is gone, my view is wrong, signatures are messed up, all the PST to add, other email accounts, etc. I could go on and on...

The last things I do with outlook
New profile
Reinstalling

almost never!

It seems to have worked. She called again saying her contacts weren't there, but a described a quick iphone sync that'd fix that. Told her I don't put much stock into outlook though, recommended she move to google apps. Even though it is working now, doesn't mean it'll continue without incident in the future. Thanks again ---

"recommended she move to google apps"

>??? and use Outlook?

Lisa, do you have an article that outlines the top issues with that?

GASMO seems to work for the most part, but I can see that hosted Exchange would be better than going through that layer of translation.

Here is my street creds on the subject

Outlook + iPhone + Exchange = Perfect pairing
Outlook + iPhone + Google Apps/Gmail = Bad pairing
Outlook + Google Apps/Email only = Ok pairing, doesn't always sync well--IMAP issues usually
Outlook + Google Apps + calendar + contacts syncing = Disaster
Google Apps + Browser + Android =Perfect pairing

Basically, what I tell folks is if you use Outlook, Google apps is a bad choice. If you don't use Outlook, then Google Apps is a great choice. You will be hard pressed to get an Outlook lover to change over.
