I was at a clients house last not trying to fix a cannot send email problem through outlook. Figured it was a settings problem somewhere. What I tried:

1. Logged into customers account at charter.net, I can send email there, so no block on there end or anything.
2. https://www.spectrum.net/support/internet/email-settings/?domain-redirect=true tried these settings
3. https://www.spectrum.net/support/internet/outlook-2010-setup/ tried these settings
4. Uninstalled the program reinstalled.
5. I thought, maybe it was something to do with pst file, tried to start a new account with same info, it failed to send to.
6. Thunderbird loads fine on start up, sends and receives. Tried copying those settings, still no go.
7. Disabled firewall on computer
8. Set the router on a DMZ for that computer.

I think i'm going to try a repair on the pst file, but don't see how that can be it when i can't create a new profile that sends either???

But now that I'm not freaking out in the customers house, I could try to delete it or repair it and rebuild?

Any other suggestions I could try

Did you make a new outlook profile or just delete the account and re add it?

Yes - as per @mikeroq - you need to delete the profile from Control Panel > Mail (Close Outlook first), then recreate it from there.

PS What does outlook say is going wrong when you try to send?

I created a new account with the same email. Leaving hers in place.

I'm going to try a repair of pst first then try to delete, just didn't want her to lose all her emails, but to get it to work. think i'm going to have to.

More ideas would be appreciated, going back out Saturday morning.

You can make a new profile without deleting the current one. I would make a new profile add the account and see what happens.

Did you make a new pst when you were trying things?

Yes I did make a new profile:
Account>clicked new>added her information again, it still failed to send there. If this is what your talking about, I'm assuming it would automatically make a new profile?

Just adding an account will add it to the same profile. You have to go to control panel mail applet or run outlook.exe /profiles

I'm not familiar with Charter.net, but from what you've said I'm assuming this is a POP3 account? If/when you set up the new one, can you use IMAP? If so, let it repopulate with her mail before you start playing around with her PST file. Must say I would be surprised if the PST file is causing this- you absolutely sure it's not just something really crass like a trailing space after the username - that sort of thing? That's where I'd be looking, initially, at least.

I've had many send and receive problems where changing the pst file makes it work again.

You say it works fine with Thunderbird, why not just use that? Regardless, IMAP or POP3? The #1 issue I run across is the incoming and outgoing ports being incorrect.

I haven't had that many, personally. Still - would be a good idea to trundle her on to IMAP if poss - that would get the PST file out of the equation.

check Outlook addons - remove everything, including AV. What actual error message are you receiving? The email account is an ISP branded provided on?

if your A/V supports control over email filtering, disable it. test and adapt.

Well previous to outlook 2013 you will still have a pst file with the ost for imap. Maybe he means the ost file?

I did mean the OST file, my bad.

But the error from what I remember was it can't communicate with the SMTP server.

for my reference later: Offline mode

This sort of problem boils down to two things

1.) Corrupted Outlook Profile, again you make a new one with the mail applet in the control panel.
2.) Corrupted AV software, remove all AV software reboot to test.

Actually make that three things...

ISPs will generally prevent access to SMTP over TCP 25 to prevent spam transmission. So if your mail settings aren't configured to use SSL on TCP 465 or TLS on on 587 you arne't sending anything from anywhere.

Everyone has their idea of what the normal problems is as I can see. Mine seem to be always weird. The last Outlook issue ended up being AOL needed to have unsecure apps connect on their end to get it to connect. The one before that, he ended up needing two way authentification turned off and he forgot to mention that to me haha

Both of those problems indicate authentication failures, in my experience that's a bidirectional fault, not a unidirectional fault.

Got it, I ended up calling charter and had them disable the account and renabling it. I know from years of isp tech support that it does wonders. Just didn't think of it as everything else worked.
