OK, I'm stuck

I have a windows XP pro box that has a broken tcp/ip something.

The box was infected with a nasty and when that was resolved the internet would not work. yet telnet, and ping and dns are all functioning.

I have done the winsockxpfix and the lspfix, tried to remove tcp/ip and reinstall it (though it didnt act like I expected so that may have been not complete) and am just about to add a second NIC for tickles and thought I would post here.

I havent run into this before so any advice would be appreciated

1) Try: ipconfig /flushdns then Input static DNS addresses 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2
2) Windows XP SP 1 or earlier: at command prompt type "netsh winsock reset" to reset TCP/IP Stack.
3) Windows XP SP 2-3: at command prompt type "netsh winsock reset catalog" to reset TCP/IP Stack.

it already has static dns, I had already tried this and forgot to mention it since there was no change and I didnt run the dns flush beforehand.

I ran it again and restarted. same issue. it acts as if dns isnt working but I can ping a website name and it will resolve and ping successfully.

I will go home tonight and google on this and tomorrow morning I will start fresh

Just for the fun of it download norton removal tool and run it then zonealarm removal tool then try internet again.

Have seen this once or twice... Go to Windows Firewall and create rules to allow TCP ports 80 and 443. Stupid, I know, but I've seen 80 done once and 443 a couple times.

check the browser isn't set to use a proxy.
I have seen malware that does this a few times.

When you say Internet, I assume you mean IEXPLORE? If so, try Firefox, and eliminate one area of possiblity - that its corrupted something in IE only and not the whole TCP/IP kaboodle.

I'd check the net setting isn't set to auto detect, the proxy and the HOSTS file isn't set on something stupid.

Also check for Browser Helpers, delete NIC in devmunger and get it to put it back, then it might reinstall TCP/IP for ya.

Failing that, make sure the advanced settings are all turned on as theys should be(HTTP is ticked)

Sounds like it could be a corrupt Norton Firewall... or other third party firewall. Don't disable, but uninstall any third party firewalls. Reinstall afterward if you must.

I'm gonna bet it works in safe mode...

i had similar problems as well, went through alot of the things mentioned above plus more, turned out to be a hardware problem, try it and see if it makes a difference.

If you can ping a website/hostname or IP address and can't resolve a webpage, then maybe the first thing to try; as already mentioned would be a different browser like FireFox for example. Thus, being able to rule out the default browser as the problem. Try resetting IE to defaults in the options menu.

Well, thanks SOHO-NZ, when I checked the explorer setting proxy was checked. Once I cleared it I can browse no problem. I had even wandered through IE settings more than once and never caught that.

Just fix a dell system like this yesterday. just make sure you check for rootkits as it was this systems problem

I also had one like this recently. If I remember right, it was Combofix that fixed it. If not that, Malwarebytes. And yes, there were rootkits posing as drivers on this one.

Find you Local or Wireless connection icon therein under LAN or High-Speed Connection.
Right click and Properties.
You should an "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" item listed under "Connection uses the Following Items".
