Hi there :D
I need some help with Microsoft Office.
A client formatted his notebbok few days a go due to a virus problem by recomendation of a "friend". Well, no backups no planification... total disaster.
anyway, he reinstalled everything, including office 2003, and now, many of the files he opens with MSword looks like the screenshot

I must say that not all *.doc files open like the image, but when i open most of them, there comes the problem.
Are all of them corrupt? I was thinking about reinstall office or disk issues.
any of you have any ideas ?
Ideas are welcome :P
... and thanX :D

When you look at the properties the file. What does it say about the file. Is your client 100% sure he is using word 2003 and not 2007 and or try this....

go to www.openoffice.org and open using that.

Download a stand alone word viewer. also I dont think word uses .doc anymore i think its .docx those are three options to help you on your way.

Goodluck.

I very much doubt it has anything to do with a computability pack, if you try and open a .docx file on a standard Office 2003 install you'll get an incompatible file type error. The fact that some documents open OK point to corruption in their files.

If you can create, save and reopen a Word document on their system OK then their installation is OK. If you can open, edit & save a known good document (i.e one created on your system) then their installation is OK.

Have you opened one of the suspect files in Notepad? Ignoring all the file header information you should see identifiable elements of the original text, if you can't the file is fubar'd - most probably by the "virus" or their attempts to repair the damage.

At this stage I would advise the customer that had you been called in earlier (i.e when the apparent virus attack was identified) then you may have been able to limit the damage, but because the system has been messed around with since the original problem then recovery is unlikely. Offer your bill and walk away, it's not your problem if the customers do not back up their data and then act upon unqualified advice to try and fix the problem themselves.

I had this problem and I have forgotten how I fixed it. I might have had to do something in regedit I really can't recal. If I can find anything out I will let you know A.S.A.P. but until then just skim over some the registry entries for MS Office.

ThanX to all of you for the feed :D
tomorrow i´ll try openoffice, WordViewer and all your ideas.
I´ll keep you informed :D
ThnX again :P

I have recently had a failing usb backup drive that I recovered .doc's from. Unfortunately these .doc's where corrupted and they showed exactly like this.
