Aloha I have 2 old 2005 Dell Laptop Inspiron 6000
computers. Need to put the two together to make one
usable one. Thinking of on the 1st one:
taking the working screen off, the fan, and the RAM chip
(increased RAM)
On this one the touch/mouse pad does not work.
Case is in poor condition a bit broken at the corners.
Speakers not working so well. And will not charge the
battery.

On the other the screen does not work, has less RAM,
fan going out.
But better case, speakers, mouse pad works, can charge
the battery.

Putting parts mentioned above from #1 to #2.

Anyone know of any schematics or direction URL's for
any of this? Would greatly appreciate it. Also any
ideas or suggestions. Just have to get something going
for 4 more months on this project.
Thank you very much All Antoinette

Not sure why you would need a schematic for just swapping parts.

A tear down of a 6000 takes 15-30 minutes depending on your skill. Tear them apart, swap what you want and rebuild the good one.
You can google the disassembly or get dell manuals for the details.

Is this really a project for 4 months ?

Well there has always been a problem with the charging and speaker with Dell. I am also facing the same problem.

Thanks for the confidence to go from PC repair to Laptops!

Oh you are funny NY Jimbo.
Or I guess I should say I am funny.
I did not realize the way I spoke that it indicated that it would take me four months. No we are moving to Panama in 4 months. (the country) and that is the soonest we will have enough money to go out and buy 2 new PC's 1 Tablet and a Samsung 4 Cell Phone. A lot of money however dough/bread/moulah/denero/etc.
Sorry about that. I was going to take off the whole top of the laptop and then did some checking around with others who have also rebuilt PC's and tried to do laptops but had problems. They said this was almost an impossiblity to do to actaully change the whole lid. So am just going to replace the screen, fan, Ram etc. I have never changed out a screen before - so that is my desire for wanting an idea of how to. Laptops are much different than PC's. I don't have the experience with them I do with PC's. Thank you for telling me I can at lease google the disassembly. Also will look for any Dell manuals that MIGHT still be around. Parts are even hard to find for these relics!
Thank you Antoinette
P.S. Oh I did get the service manual and am posting the URL just for anyone else who in the future comes to this post and wants it. You are right there is info on google on how to do the things I want to do. IT is STILL much different than working on familiar PC's but I am going to give it a go. Thank you for the shot in the arm and confidence to try it! Aloha Antoinette

Oh it won't let me put in the URL yet. Sorry folks. I did see it however if you do a search in technibble for Dell Inspirons 6000.
Also I want to say a BIG THANK YOU to everyone on this site. I know why I have been a member for YEARS even though I had to re join to log in for some reason. I've been getting all my newsletters though. I love this site because people are so NICE and none of the experts demean people who are newbies or just have started on laptops vs PC and don't have experience. I LOVE reading the threads and have for years and always STILL do and did just today LEARN SO MUCH just reading in here. Absoluttely LOVE it!

The title of your thread "Now that Dell was sold" implies you think Dell is going away or their products will disappear and no longer be supported.

It was only a change in investors in Dell...basically a % of stocks are just under a different name now. It's not like Acer bought up Dell and will make it disappear.
Didn't change how us in the IT field deal with Dell in any way.

Dell hasn't changed hands yet. They have yet to vote on this. And the offer would give Michael Dell complete control over the stock as the company is buying it back. The investors backing this are NOT taking stock options as the company is going private.

This is assuming that any of this happens. Lots of stockholders aren't pleased with this offer and Carl Icahn is looking at Dell as well.

Frankly I don't see either option happening as going private and increasing the debt load with a company shrinking in profits is just not a good plan.

Laptops (most of them anyways) are not difficult to tear down, fix/replace/whatever/ and put them back together.

As Jimbo said, that machine can be fully disassembled in about 30 min and probably faster if you had previous experience.

Its not hard, especially if your just swapping parts.

If you can find videos on the tear down, you can literally watch someone do it and just do what they do on the video.

Dell's

Everyone is SO wonderful on /in here. I just LOVE LOVE LOVE this place.
Oh I CAN and WILL do it! Thanks to all your confidence and support! Only worked lots of PC new to laptops - no time like the present. Have checked out all the videos and manual etc. Will give it my best shot.

My main concern about the whole Dell (possible) sale is the QUALITY of Dell going down the tubes. Dell has been our lifes mainstay for quality computers for so many many years! My husband still has his old PC going from WAYyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy BACK WHEN and I just keep working on it when it needs it which is not that often. A GOOD OLD Del.

Saw way too many name brands gone by the way side with the change over of hands. Specifially HP I would not have anything HP if it fell from Heaven. Been through the ringer with those things! Finally threw it in the ocean after one and half whole years of having had it with constant mother boards going out, HD"s the list goes on and on. But there are probably some who love the product too, so this is just my bad experience. Along with their ext. HD's just a real scam on those. Some people are lucky to get 3 months out of them. Those who are doing file restoration are making big bucks with all they have to go through to get peoples files back, but dont' get me started on ext. HD's. That is why the cloud appeared. :) isn't it?
Well sorry to be so long winded. I just LOVE LOVE LOVE other people with the guts and brains to tackle the jobs I find myself doing through the years. Have a nice day everyone.

It makes a big difference if the laptops belongs to you when you do the tear down, if something goes wrong you don’t have to answer to the customer
Takes the heat off and makes it simpler
I dismantled an old IBook that belonged to me would never have done it for a customer and it was not too difficult with YouTube

I don't think you have anything to worry about with the "Dell" brand.

I find most brands are actually pretty much around the same level, unless you start talking about some of the more prestigous business class lines or apples hardware.

For apple/business class you pay a higher premium, but you also get better stuff and better support. That's coming from someone who still feels that apples stuff is too expensive.

As far as the rest of it, they usually build machines out of the stuff they can get the best deals on for more then one reason.

I've had HP machines (my first computer was a HP Pavilion before they merged with Compaq or whatever) that lasted wonderfully. In that machine I never had a problem that wasn't of my own doing. Over ten years later and that thing still runs to this day, and it's had a hard life. It's spent close to the last five years being a workstation/bench machine/loaner machine and not even so much as a bad hard drive.

My Dell XPS M1530 has to be going on 8 or 9 years old and the only thing that's ever had to be replaced was a hard drive about five years ago. Battery still holds over an hours worth of charge... screen still works good and so on.

TL;DR - It's not the brand, it's the machine! (and how it's taken care of)

Unlike many companies, Dell actually makes most of their service manuals available for download. Here's the one you want for the Inspiron 6000:

This is exactly why I only recommend Dell and Lenovo notebooks to my clients.
