New computer tech here that plans on doing residential work. For residential work, what are your percentages for each type of repair/service? I have read that about 50% of jobs are virus/malware/spyware related.

If you count the problems left behind by malware I'd say 80%. 10% hardware. 10% other. But I don't do it full time and most of my biz is word of mouth I'm "the virus guy"

I use the following:

CCleaner
ATF-Cleaner
ComboFix
Malwarebytes Free
SuperAntiVirus Free
Avast! Free
Microsoft Security Essentials

I set Avast and MSE to real time protection with auto updates before I return a machine to a user.

Do you use any diagnostics, or do you simply rely upon consumer-oriented one-click-fix solutions?
 
I just use what I listed. I am here to learn how the pros do it, and plan on stepping up my game, so I plan on asking a lot of questions. Feel free to PM me some good links/threads to get started on taking my "tool box" to the next level. Thanks! Fred

So you leave both Avast and MSE runnign on a machine you return? Or am I misunderstanding?

If so, why do you think you would need both. I would think it would just slow the machine down a lot more, and only provide negligible better coverage. plus, if one catches something the other will as well. And they will keep pulling it out of each other quarantine I would think.

SAS Portable
MSE

But sometimes use others.

I used to try manual removal last if these or others didn't work. but after a recent experience with combofix almost hosing a machine after a removal. I now try to manually remove first, and scan with other programs just to check my work.
 
Yes, I have run both together on both of my machines at home for quite a while with no issues, and I have done the same thing for several people with no issues. Several people from another forum I frequent recommend it. The reason being that one may miss something, but hopefully the other will catch it.

Why are you posting this thread in the Business/Legal issue section? This should be in the Tech-to-Tech Computer Help thread instead. Bryce, the founder and owner of this site and forum has made this clear for all TN members:

Post it in the Right Forum - If you have a potential virus, adware or spyware issue then you should post in our "Security, Viruses and Trojans" forum. If you have a hardware issue, it would go in our "Hardware" forum.
If you have no idea whether your issue is software, hardware, Microsoft or virus based, then our "General Computer Help" forum would be best.

Just a friendly FYI for you since you're new to the TN Boards-:)
 
So anyways... lately it has been at least 50% malware. Next would probably be laptop accidental damage. Hardware burn outs seem to be less common nowadays. This stuff will fluctuate in the next 3 months.
 
I don't have a virus issue or a hardware issue. I don't need another tech to help me with my computer. The thread began with a question about the percentage of each type of repairs/issues that other techs are dealing with on average in their business. The question still stands. Someone answered 80% malware, which began a discussion about malware and malware apps.

Thanks for the good info. 50% for malware is what I have read in a few places. Would laptop accidental damage mainly be drops and spilled drinks? Thank you! Fred

For residential I would say 80% is malware / windows screw ups.
10% networking and 10% hardware. I would say keep your hardware inventory to a minimum and find a good supplier for nextday delivery of hardware.

I don't think you'll need anything else. Maybe learn to remove a virus manually.

Home Users 80% Virus, Businesses 80% Software related. The 20% of each is hardware and networking.
