Hi,

I have a laptop running windows 2000 Pro connecting wireless through a linksys PCMCIA card. When I click on my network places then click on computers around me I get an error message box saying MSHOME inaccessible. My other 2 computers are using MSHOME for the workgroup name. How can I get my laptop to connect to the network. Internet works but when I wake the computer from sleep mode I have to wait 2-3 minutes for the wireless connection to connect and internet explorer to work.

Any ideas would be great.

Thanks
Mark

First, have you checked to make sure that any firewall software isn't blocking lan access for some reason? Norton products, in particular, block lan access automatically for some stupid reason.

Aside from that, make sure you have file and printer sharing enabled.
If that doesn't work, the easiest solution is to just install netbeui on all of the systems (unless it's vista, because the protocol's no longer supported). I admit that that's not the best advice, but it's the easiest fix most of the time.

Hi thanks for the advice. I have file & print sharing enabled on all computers. both desktops work perfect sharing with each other just can't get the lapto to join in. I don't have any firewall or anti virus installed on the laptop.

Thanks

What OS are the desktops running? I still think that the key here is that the Win2000 system isn't sending or receiving host names in the workgroup.
If they're running XP, they're sending NetBios information via TCP/IP...Windows 2000 is supposed to do that, but I'm not sure what the hitch is, but doesn't always work as it should. I guess rather than installing NetBeui, you could check to make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled. Network Properties -> TCP/IP -> Advanced -> WINS -> Check "Enable Netbios over tcp/ip"

Are all of the other computers running Win2k or are some XP?

Try disabling the web client service.

Go to start→run and type "services.msc" in the window that appears (without the " " 's)

Find the "WebClient" listing and double-click it. Then change it's startup type to disabled.

Also - check your advanced tcp/ip properties - ensure that enable netbios over tcpip is checked (advanced/wins tab)

Restart each computer and try again.

*Edit* Okay, somehow I missed the last couple of posts before I responded with my networking checklist. My apologies.

Hi,

Thanks for the advice so far. I made sure tcp over netbios was checked. Still no good. I also noticed that under system properties the Network ID button is grey out so I can't select it to change the network name.

The laptop is running windows 2000 Pro and the 2 desktops are both XP.

This has me stumped..

Ahhhh.... The missing link.
Install "Client for Microsoft Networks"

Hello,

Just following up. All is working now. I had "Client for Microsoft Networks" installed so I removed it and re-installed and everything worked fine then. Thanks for all the input and hopefully if someone runsa across this in the future they can find the cure here.
