A client has requested we put some sort of monitoring / keylogging software onto one of the computers that their company owns & an employee uses; it needs to have pretty thorough logging capabilities.

Basically, the employee is claiming that "they're busy working" when in fact they've been caught other times doing inappropriate / non-work related things on their PC.

The employer needs evidence with which to confront their employee.

What do you recommend?

Thanks!

Thanks! Any idea on pricing? I get kind of nervous when a company doe$n't li$t their price$.....usually means $$$$
This is for a single employee for a small law practice; so they'd be willing to pay *maybe* $200, but they want to keep it as cost-effective as possible.

However, that Veriato might be interesting / useful for some larger clients of mine!

Why not just start with last activity view from nirsoft before going down a legal rathole? If they do not have the acceptable use policy in place as Mark suggested they are likely to get sued for wrongful termination if they take action against the employee. I will tell you from many years of experience that if you or your client have an employee they do not trust no amount of software monitoring is going to change that and they need to terminate them. Most states are "employment at will" which means you can terminate an employee at any time without specifying a reason.

Yeah they may have to notify the employees that they are being monitored. That's what one of the offices I do work for does in their employee contract, it states they are being monitored. They use Spector CNE (now veratio) and I think the investment for 10 licenses was like $1500 but that was like 7 years ago.

But seriously if you feel the need to monitor an employee they should just can them, sounds inevitable anyways.

Just because they are a law firm does not make them immune from litigation. But they may already have some kind of AUP in place. And there are plenty of ways to gather information without installing a keylogger.

And I agree with the others. If they have this problem, and I'm sure they have discussed it already with the employee, the best thing would be to just cut their ties.

I can recommend to use screen record, in the result you can see what are users doing on their PC for all day, week,

The «Screen recorder» mode allows you to monitor user activity completely independently of Viewer. (LiteManager software)

Hope it help you!

PS
There is a Audio-video chat in Capture mode it can connect to remote Web cam, to see what's going on in the office.

We have run into this a few times and we NEVER give legal advice regarding employee monitoring. We normally agree to install/configure it for them, but suggest they speak with a lawyer regarding the legality of employee monitoring and leave it at that.
