Just wondering if someone has ran across this and might be able to point me in the right direction.

Customer brings in a Toshiba Laptop and says that the LCD just shuts off but the computer is still running.

  • Video is fine for about 4-5 minutes then LCD goes black
  • Faint image is visible on the screen
  • Tested video on an external - no problem
  • Replaced LCD - problem persists
  • Replaced inverter - problem persists
  • Cabling/connector looks good, nothing wrong that I can see

One thing worth noting, I can hear a hissing/humming type sound coming from around the area of the inverter. I'm not sure if the sound is coming from the inverter itself but it seems like it is.When the LCD goes black, the sound ceases. The replacement inverter is new and not a refurb.

It would seem like something is heating up causing the issue but I'm having problems putting my finger on it.

Any help is appreciated.

This has happened to me a couple of times. Have you taken the battery out and plugged it up without the battery? Sometimes the battery is so far gone it takes so much of the power to try to charge it and therefore the LCD doesnt have enough power to stay lit. Second thing is make sure you blow out the bottom of the laptop where the processor fan is with compressed air. This has fixed several power fail issues for me due to the fan not being able to properly cool the processor thus shutting the power off due to overheating. One last thing you may want to try is reseating the memory. Good luck!!!
