Name of app? Snapshot of windows

A year or so back, someone posted a program for XP only I think that allowed you to "pause" the windows partition in its current state. Then any changes you make (install software/get a virus) are not saved and it reverts back to it's original state after a reboot.

I've had a quick search but had no luck finding the name of this program.

Do you mean DeepFreeze? http://www.faronics.com/html/deepfreeze.asp its not free last time i checked but there might be a opensource alternative somewhere, any ideas anyone?

Windows SteadyState, the newer version of their "Shared Computer Toolkit" does a similar sort of thing - for both XP and Vista, although it's most likely overkill if you just wanted the functionality you described.

Thanks for the reference. This is EXACTLY what I have been looking for to set up my rental laptops. [for those clients who absolutely positively have to have internet access while their computer is in my shop].

That is an interesting piece of software, never saw a program like that. If you don't mind me asking, what are you doing with it?

A customers laptop infected my USB stick and then I infected my laptop with it. It's odd because it didn't effect Windows 7, but as soon as I stuck it into my XP laptop it went mental! (I've since got an SD card and SD>USB converter so my files are write protected).

I'm hoping sandboxie will prevent this from happening in the future, but I don't think it works in the way I thought it did.

Autorun is off by default for non-optical drives in Windows 7.

No problem, I wish Sandboxie worked with Win7, I have it on my laptop and my browser is mainly what I keep in the box.
