just thought id post some thoughs i have about the increase in companys moving to paperless systems and some of the things they do right and wrong

going paperless

the ultimate bennefit to theese online systems is that it is on the whole increasing productivity now instead of having to fill out paper forms and send them in to be digitized and entered into the database they can effectivley be entered directly into the database by the person filling out the form which is good and saves alot of time as well as improves search times for applications

ease of accesibility
this is where the plan starts to fray a bit in my opinion sometimes theres things that are going to online application that shouldnt be one example is council housing applications where i agree there online house finder and application is good cause it makes the process faster and cleaner it also makes it less accesible to anyone who will inevitably fall though the cracks

such as

the elderley
the homeless
those without computers

the same also applies to the new goverment universal jobmatch system which
involves jobseekers needing near unlimited access to a computer in order to be able to use it effectivley all parties give there own answers and solutions but they all seem to use them as scape goats to the real problem for example

use a library computer yes its a solution but do you really want to be throwing all you personel information into a public computer when you probably dont know how to clear the cache and the cache that rememebrs what you commonly enter into a text box

use our special job search lounge
ok how are you justifying funding a room with 30 ipads to be a cost saver over a paper form and same issues again with the library system only now the supply of machines is limited not to mention a hacker would LOVE to get his dirty mitts on a goverment unsecured wifi connection

if there going to start using a paperless system there going to fail you need there to be a redundant system in place for anyone who can and will fall through the cracks even if its you speaking to the elederley blind gentleman while you fill out the online form for him at your desk

security ABOVE and below

universal jobmatch is my main offender here they first set you up with a verry convoluted login info that consists of a arbitrary number of about 12 charecters seperated by spaces this will be your usuer id so start remebering 2736 37263 5958 cause youll be using that alot next they give you what they thing is a good password so now emmorise 6chs9fn49d there is the option to change this password but there system is either stupid or failing bad because out of the blue the system will always forget your password and wont let you login if you change it im gussing they keep rolling old backups so from the get go there login alone will cuase problems for people

then theres your data they will make wait im sorry you have to make your c.v searchable to employers so you effectivley place your mobile number possibly home address and your email viewable to employers not a big deal but they openley say its not there responsibiltiy to ensure the authenticity of employers using the system further justified by the constant scam job poistings that seep through the cracks so now your left to fight the hoardes of scammers and con artists that want your money and data otherwise youll loose everything and be sanctioned for not participating in finding work

if your going to host a online system be responsible for your system and the safety and security of your members and users

faster does not mean more
boots are the top perpitrators for this they seem to think that because its faster to apply online they can have you do a bigger application so rather than a c.v and a few questions theyll ignore your c.v have you fill it all out again they make you submit 4 seperate applications ranging from working shifts to quizzes on customer interactions to one that just plainly reads as a psychic evaluation

its not good its just annoying when i want to work for you and have to set asside a chunk of my day to fill out your insanley long applications just to get a interview when the interview is going to include almost everything ive told you

email is email take it or get out

short one most people require a isp email so @virginmedia @aol @bt @blueyonde
library users cant get one of theese and even people who have theese still use google and other services because its a morer permernant email adddress that they wont loose if they switch service providers

have monkey will code

yeah some of theese systems are just bad i mean real bad

equality what equality

ok straight up i dont undersand this i know that theres equality and race acts in the uk but why do you need to know my ethnicity gender and sexual orientation based on the equality and diversity act sureley if your following this act you would collect applications blind or is it that you use theese as statistics to show off and what if your statistics are low in 1 ethnic group are you going to start playing the ploices game and having huge employment drives aimed soleley at certian ethnic groups diversity does not mean equal numbers of everyone all in nice neat groups its diverse as the name suggests 100 australians 20 british people 5 irish 17 muslims no care about the numbers just hire them and accept them because they were good at what they do

checkboxes are like a legally binding prommiss and im totally a upstanding citezen

this one is going slightly off topic but still somewhat rellevant

just because a user clicked the yes i am over 18 website does not mean they are actually 18 why have this box and then allow everyone who is not 18 to view porn buy tobbaco products and do other adult services it dosent make sense to me just remove it

thats my rant im off to go do battle with a online housing application

Great points. Going paperless saves money, time and the trees.

also good points to a degree

I don't think the system will ever go totally paperless. I think the goal is to reduce the dependency on some natural resources. I'm sure their are other goals. And for the places that do go totally paperless, I'd like to think their won't be much aftershock there. An elderly blind gentlemen probably wouldn't be suitable for a job selling computers and computer accessories at best buy anyways.

I'll agree heavily here, most of the online systems for applications are junk.

equality what equality

Often, if not always as far as I can recall, you're not required to fill these sections out if you do not want to

checkboxes are like a legally binding prommiss and im totally a upstanding citezen

oh for the love of god

i just had to share this one

so im applying for some christmas work with royal mail for the none uk people theese are the guys who deliver our mail like us postal service

first of they have a massive application form consisting on 4 sections each containing a few questions mostly stuff that theyd find on the c.v

now i can understand them not wanting to trawel through c.vs and a database would be easier to search for specifc TRRIBUTES THERE AFTER

BUT THATS NOT HOW IT WILL WORK

after filling this out you then have to press print application form and it will print everything youve done online out that you then take to the interview so basically its all pointless

and to add insult to injury the roayl mail is one of the few companys ive seen that DONT have a address finder in the address field you know the one where you give it a post code and then a house number and it does the rest

is it just me or am i not the only one who thinks not everything should be online

whats next
online doctor online police and ambulence calling online sales and therapy sessions its going to get to the stage where you use the web for everything and were just not ready for that its hard enough trying to remind clueless goverment workes to not leave the damn laptops containing voter records and tax information on the train without trying to teach people about securing data online
