My 82 year old mother called me from her office and very calmly asked what to do. She said "there is a voice telling me my computer has been taken over, has my ip address and is warning me not to shut it off".

Told her just to restart and she would be fine.

Also said the tech call was on the house ;)

Your 82 year old Mother is really sharp. I've had many, much younger and supposedly smarter, customers who call up saying they made the phone call.

1990 pr0n. I mean common. the Legacy stuff is the best. You got Ron Jeremy, Peter North, Jenna Jameson, Silvia Saint....the list goes on.

May need to split this off on its own topic but what do you suggest as properly configured?
I add the checked items as they are not checked by default. This is Firefox, I don't use Chrome but the settings are the same in Chrome and Edge if needed. Also note this is Win 10.

Also please note I have Defender and Malwarebytes Premium as my only AV/Antimalware on all of my clients since day one of Win 10.

We do not know what browser and version of Windows the OP's Mother was using.

All I can say from my personal experience going all over the web (I tend to get around) and from my clients with the same setup Noe of those redirects happen. But I do get a fairly stream of NEW callers because of those redirects.

Malwarebytes browser extension for chrome or firefox install it no settings change required i try to get customers off of internet explorer as it is full of security holes and outdated.

Nice!! Didn't know Malwarebytes had a browser extension out now.

Seems too many of the users give the Malwarebytes extension one star on reviews. Still in Beta and blocking everything in site. Not sure I want to go there yet.

My bet is the bad reviews are from fake tech support sites it blocks every single one of them i have been using it since it was released does a VERY good job at blocking bad stuff as it uses heuristics uses very little resources and never had any issues with any websites.

And when you see reviews like this you go yeaaaaa right..

Tried it for a couple of days. For some reason it does not like Yahoo and wouldn't let me log in to my account. Also right after installing it I noticed my wi-fi coverage throughout our house went from excellent to almost none unless I was right next to the router.
