Just wanted to let everyone know you can download the beta of Microsoft Secuirty Essentials formerly Morro from Microsoft Connect @ http://connect.microsoft.com/

It does seem to be lightwieght and a did a quick scan of my system in no time flat. I does offer real time protection. My first impression is Windows Defender on steroids.

Lol ! I knew MS where on something !

How long did it take you to scan ? (Guessin' your system is uber clean)

Would like to know on a detection rate also if anyone has tested it in a Virtual environment; or on an infected machine..

@lawson thanks, downloading now.

@meth
are you really intrested to know what its like, if yes then try it yourself, else don't even make a thread about it because all the thread will end up is bashing M$ even if this product is good, its very in style to bash M$ and to have a MAC. I'm really sick of MS bashing. thats one of the reasons i'm gonna stop posting on Technibble.

Abe

(Don't worry you'll still hear from me on the automation and scripting forum, at least there people are helpful and not getting at each other.)

I took about 5 minutes on a my Windows 7 64bit system. I have a AMD Athlon 64 X2 @ 2.61Ghz and 4Gigs of RAM. It's very clean not only is a realitivly new build I've also never clicked to see the Olsen Twins naked.

Hopefully the EU takes them to court for abusing their market position by trying to corner the market on virus protection by offering a good product for free. Those bastards.

Jesse (will download and test it out tonight on an infected system)

Well folks I kind of tested Morro out. Installed it in on a virtual machine running Windows XP SP3 with all current updates and IE8.

I used the Eicar test file, it was last updated in September 06 but Security Essentals caught it right away and blocked the download. So that's one succesfully test.

The site was eicar(dot)com. I didn't make it a link for obvious reasons. It is only a test file but just in case use at your own risk. It can also be found at other sites as well.

Does anyone know of any sites other sites that offer tests vitus or even just plain bad sites to go to? Maybe I've been safe surfing too long or don't know what to search for when looking for trouble but I just wasn't coming up with anything. I dont' know how the hell people even get infected. Guess I'll have to try random porn sites. Research is so tough sometimes.

Overall, I'm liking it. I need to try it in a test environment and blast it to hell to see how it responds, but for now, it's not bad. It seems to only add 2 processes to the machine, MsMpEng.exe and msseces.exe. Between the 2 of them, they only use 67 mb of memory and barely register on the cpu usage. Imagine, a Microsoft product that doesn't eat up all your system resources.:eek:

To follow up on angry_geek's wonderful report Microsoft Secuirty Essentials takes the place of Windows Defender for any of you that where wondering.

First Windows 7 and now the AntiVirus maybe Bill Gates leaving was a a good thing?

Isn't it also replacing One Care and possibly Live Care?

That's the only possibility. The bought and paid for US politicians will just kiss ass and continue to fill every available orifice with their $$.

(Abe - I love you man, but these bastards deserve constant, unrelenting bashing.)

It appears the Beta is over and no more downloads at MS.

May be just a response to the servers getting slammed with the release of 7rc2.

I wanted to try it, but my XP dl puked and I only got Vista.

Later......

I tried it for a day, I didn't really like it. It ate up more system resources than Avira, which I disabled in the process.

Going to try Security Essentials on a customer's machine today that has a fake antivirus on it. Will post results later.
