I have an HP 400 series slim desktop/ 8.1. Client attempted to install Avast paid version on it (bought a 3 license deal from avast for almost $100). System now boots to black screen, no cursor. With the 2nd license, he installed Avast on his daughter's 8.1 laptop and now the same thing with it - back screen, no cursor.

I've attempted every boot repair in the book for Win 8 to no avail. At this point I'm backing up data and going for a reinstall.

Just wanted to let everyone know that Avast seems to be having some real issues going on right now...

I'm an Avast reseller. This will sound crazy but download the free version and make a rescue disc or usb and run it. I had a Windows 8 system boot to just a black screen and my rep said to do this. It found infections and after the system booted. I don't know if this is the same issue your having.

DM,

Thanks for that info. I may do that if I run into this again. I've used the avast boot discs on other systems in the past with success. At this point, since it was a "long in the tooth" install on this system anyway, I did a reinstall and am moving on to Win 10 right away.

BTW, do you know if Avast has addressed the Win 10 issues yet?

They haven't told me if they have.

I've only had an issue with Avast on Windows 10 when doing just the upgrade, which I have only done a few times. I prefer the option of clean install if there's not much on the system, or I do an upgrade then clean install after activation. Before I do this I remove any installed anti-virus. When I have Windows 10 at it's final installation I then install Avast, but before I install it I turn off the firewall. After Avast is installed I re-enable the firewall. Never had a problem after that.

... or I do an upgrade then clean install after activation.

In case you weren't aware, there's no longer a reason to do an upgrade followed by a clean install. If you're using the 1511 10586 version of Win 10 -- and you should be if you're not already -- you can enter the PC's Win 7/8 license key and Win 10 will activate. Just did this last week.

I was not. I haven't done an upgrade in about a month I think.
