Microsoft is Developing New Browser / Killing IE

On one hand, it's a smart move. If they actually make it a decent browser, maybe the more tech-savvy people will want to try using it again. On the other hand, the luddites (meaning 99% of the population) all know what the big blue E is and without it won't have any idea what to click on to get on the internet. Maybe they'll just make an internet "app" and just call it "Internet."

On the refurbs we sell to residential customers I usually just rename the chrome shortcut to "Internet" and hide IE as best I can. Usually works :) So I doubt people will have too much trouble. It will also finally force people who develop software and websites to be IE only to support better browsers.

As a brand name "Internet Explorer" is trash. I would only believe this not to be IE12 if they allow us to uninstall the program. This smells to me like a 100% marketing move. All the more reason not to include it in releases. Purely Marketing. We all know what Bill Hicks said about that. If you don't know here is a link. It is not safe for work, children, old people, or anyone that is offended by profanity. Kind of like my stand up.

I can't see MS coming up with some kind of browser that would be significantly different or better than Chrome or Firefox. As others have said, this is just going to be IE with a new look and maybe some better pop-up or adblocking protection. I think they just want to get away from the name Internet Explorer. Heck, just rename it Voyager and change the look and push it out there as something new.

But....but....I will miss my Internet Exploader 3.02!

Oh the excitement when 4.0 came out....shortly after that I moved to Nutscrape Navigator on that buggy gekko engine. Oh..an Opera.

Chrome since...Chrome came out.

"We’ve deliberately moved away from the versioned document modes historically used in Internet Explorer, and now use the same markup as other modern browsers.....

.....To achieve this, Spartan loads the IE11 engine for legacy enterprise web sites when needed, while using the new rendering engine for modern web sites."

So what they are saying is that it's going to be IE11 with a "compatibility mode" that will be more like firefox and chrome when needed.

I want to see this in action before I believe their hype.

btw - that second link to their video is pure PR with lots of smiling faces and goofy camera work and graphics and that makes me stabby.

Here's "knife" for you Jimbo...

Well, I wouldn't be surprised if thats what it was... but what they said was the opposite of that :) Its more like FF and Chrome, with a "compatibility mode" that will be more like IE11 when needed. Time will tell the truthfulness of this claim.

It looks pretty slick... from what I've seen on the preview reviews.

I'm waiting to see speed tests... the javascript engine in IE has really lagged behind chrome and firefox.

-Still the same dis-functional Favorites manager?
-Still even without a Paste & Go right-click option?

Internet explorer isn't going anywhere. "Spartan" will just be the "new, mainstream" browser but IE isn't going away.

Far far too many government, military, and fortune 500 companies are wayyy to integrated with IE to have it die.

I got Spartan yesterday as part of build 10049. The download of 10049 took 30+ hrs. I don't know why because the previous

builds only took 4-5 hrs on the same machine. I read online you need to disconnect from the internet to install the program

or it will hang. I did and it only took an hour to install.

Spartan is a little buggy. The favorites bar is partially hidden and there are some other minor problems. It has the look

and feel of the newer FF or Chrome. There is one nice feature I like. You can highlight text or make notes on a web page.

I guess you can print or email your notes, but I haven't tried.
