I think this is the problem, but I'm not sure about how to fix it.

My client has a Microsoft Account, call it jane@lawfirm.com. She was using that account for OneDrive and was using it as the Microsoft Account for a new PC she got a few months ago. That address is provided by her employer, it's a hosted Exchange account through RackSpace.

This week she had me come out and setup a secondary new computer she had purchased, she likes to have two available at all times. She also said she was having email trouble that she wanted me to help fix. She had been working with the company that provides email for support. They had told her that they thought some other device or someone was trying to access her account. They had her sign out of all her devices in an effort to fix / troubleshoot.

After setting up Outlook on the new PC it seemed OK. I did notice along the way that I was getting a prompt with the credentials "MicrosoftAccount\jane@lawfirm.com". If I trimmed it down to just "jane@lawfirm.com" it was OK. Everything seemed to be OK when I left.

But since midnight no new mail has been received. Outlook is complaining that it needs a password. Entering the password doesn't work. Can't sign in to webmail either, invalid password. Their tech told me yesterday that the account had been locking, so I presume it's locked. We haven't been able to talk to them today.

Anyway, I think the problem is because the Microsoft Account uses the same email address as their hosted Exchange.

I went ahead and had her shut down the new machine. I changed the account on the current machine to a local account (instead of a Microsoft account). It's still signed in to OneDrive with that email, so I'm not sure I've totally cleared it.

They are supposedly moving to Office 365 in the next 30 days or so, which might help. But, in the meantime... am I on the right track?
