no disks with it either

Have you tried parted magic to see if the machine is OK? You can go to everymac.com, use the serial number from an Apple to see what OS it shipped with and what is the highest version you can upgrade. Do you have an Apple account? That's the first step. Unlike M$ you can't really do diddly in the Apple ecosystem without that app store account.

Hi mark parted or gparted in linux mint from a usb the mac is fine or rather it was i took the hdd out to try a blank hdd and was going to try a inet reinstall onto a true blank whilst booting off the original via usb but whilst i managed to get the video cable back in and working yesterday ....today i can get the darn thing back in so i'm hoping the thing goes back in a bit later when i've rested and have another go, the trouble with being ill is my tolerance and fitness aren't what they were 5 years ago it'd be barkin like a dog now when i was fit and able now 10 mins of fu=rustration and i'm done for the next two days grr
got a apple account
Pre-Installed MacOS: X 10.6.6 (10J4026) Maximum MacOS: X 10.13.x (snow leopard and high sierra)
(that was useful) and one has hfs one adfs or somrthing like the not compatible thats useful and move me fwd great thanks
and the whole 2you can't do anything without apple sticking thier nose in is a pain a pita tbf but that's why they're v rich and I'm not

Are the date and time correct on the iMac? That could be the issue, bad HDD, Bad graphics card or you just need a known good usb stick with Mac OS installer

The problem with machines that old is even if you can get to 10.6.8, which provides the app store, you're very limited in what you can get in the app store for OS versions. Apple has intentionally hidden older versions. In some cases if you look around someone has managed to get a link that will open up the download in the app even if it can't be found via search.

Also be aware that those Macmini's had known issues with the HD cable. They were very thin and fragile. I had mine repaired a couple of times under warranty and they also replaced the cable as well as the drive.

you are probably correct (probably ? no definitely) however the goal here is to learn mac os a bit so apps aren't the issue getting it to boot boot something other than mac os x utilities or linux mint both of which work well aprt from os x not installing due to required download missing still it'll make a cracking LM desktop : ) if nothing else but as stated i wish to "poke about" with mac os if poss but so far its not : (
I'll keep on keeping on
