Lost touchpad and mouse function

I have a Toshiba Equium in that had very bad malware infection problems. After getting rid of most of them I install Kaspersky for scan. It found a load more that MBAM had missed and restarted. On restart I lost use of the touchpad, and any mouse plugged in installed but doesn't work. I've used the keyboard to navigate about and reinstall the drivers for the pad and mouse but although they install, device manager reports they cannot find the h/w. Yes both work fine on any boot disk you care to mention.

Same story in safe-mode, system restore points not available.

Might be worth disabling the Antivirus software and UAC if it's running Vista.

I've read a couple of things similar to this problem but not the exact issue. Making sure that windows was up to date after the malware removal was suggested and fixed some people's issue. Especially if it was XP SP3.

are these usb mouse and keyboards? Sometimes you may have to reinstall the USB drivers from the chipset...plugin a flash drive. if it doesn't see it then you may be looking at reinstalling the drivers for the USB.
