Leo Laporte - My Wifi Isnt Working!

Really? The first rule of illegal activity is you don't call a radio show and ask for help. If in doubt see rule 1.

Reminds me of people that call the cops because their drug dealer ripped them off. Or people that have warrants and get a thing in the mail claiming they win a free TV (without entering any contest) yet when they all arrive at the local gym the cops lock the doors and get 50 of them all at once.

Money quote from Laporte: "You take that risk 'cause you're cheap, Jennifer. You're gonna have to buy internet access!"

I get these people in my shop ALL THE FREAKING TIME.

It's amazing how many people will come in telling me they cannot get on the internet anymore and I ask them who is their internet provider and then tell me they have been jumping on someone elses access point.

This happens at least once a week. I tell them the same thing this Leo guy did and they still want to know how to "fix it".

I had a guy last week who couldnt get onto alot of sites all of a sudden and after a few questions it turns out he was using the wireless router of his christian friend nextdoor who is now using some kind of "family friendly" dns service and that's the reason. The guy wanted to know how to defeat the DNS and still steal the guys bandwidth. I know how to do it, but I told him I had no idea. As soon as I told him that he walked out the door without saying anything else.

It's laughable but "illegal"? California, maybe? I'm no lawyer but, at least here in Ontario, I'm 99% sure there's no law against using an open wifi. I'd heard some states or cities somewhere were talking about making it illegal to host an open wifi but I've never heard anything about jumping on a hotspot. Sounds a bit silly, to be honest. I would think that if there were any legistature anywhere, it would put the onus on the hotspot owner, not the user.

No?

People often use the word "illegal" but what they are really referring to is something that would end up in a civil case against the defendant.

In most states there is nothing "illegal" about using someone elses WIFI but it's could be theft of services or more likely "unauthorized use" of a WIFI or Network. Most likely at worst it's a civil matter, not a criminal offense.
