LCD Or Video Chip?

Hey Everyone,

I currently have a problem that I run across often enough and am always stumped as to which way to go with the machine.

In this case, I have a Toshiba Satellite L755-S5214 who's display has gone bad. In this case, it is not completely black. Instead, it is showing a consistent gray pattern on the entire screen surface. By pattern, I mean it looks like fine horizontal and vertical lines if you look closely at the screen. From a distance it simply looks like a solid gray with no other images or colorations of any kind. Even though the LCD is askew, the display is fine on the external monitor.

The reason this is always a dilemma for me is because I am not sure whether it is a screen problem or a video chip problem and to this day, I have never found a way to determine which component is the cause of the problem. If it is the chip, I do not want to waste time and money ordering a screen, but on the other hand, if it is the screen, I do not want to waste time and money on a motherboard I don't need. They way I usually address the problem is to order a replacement screen and if it turns out not to be the LCD, I return it to the vendor and try a reflow instead. This approach is time consuming if I guess wrong, so I am always wishing there was a better way to troubleshoot this sort of problem.

So, my question is this: is there a method or technique that can tell me without a doubt what the source of the problem is?

If anyone can help me with this, I would certainly appreciate it. And if there is no good way to tell, can you tell me what you usually do in a case like this one? Or, do you simply have some advice or suggestions you can offer me?

Thanks for reading.

I hook them up to an external monitor. If its still failing I order a Motherboard for it. Thats it in a nutshell. But to be sure you should disassemble and check the screen cable and make sure its not damaged or lose.

Same as coffee here. Usually the external display will be either nonfunctional or also graphically screwy if it's the chip. If not just reseat the lcd cable on the screen and mb and test. If still bad it's almost guaranteed to be a lcd issue.
