Laptop Keyboard Typing RANDOM keys! Help!

Hey all. I have a customers laptop that was in a fall. Had to repair the power jack for it.

In order to access this, I had to take the system apart obviously, and remove the keybaord. When I put the laptop back together, everything is working EXCEPT that the keyboard types RANDOM letter for each key (example: The right arrow key opens the start menu).

I plug in my USB keyboard - everything is fine.

So I ordered a new keyboard for it, assuming that maybe something was damaged on the keyboard when it fell. Now the replacement keyboard is doing the same thing. So I am left assuming that the port on the motherboard is faulty. Of course the customer is saying that there was nothing wrong with the keyboard before repair. Was the keyboard removal the straw that broke the camels back?

I even tried updating the BIOS, cuz, why not?

Anyway - the keyboard IS recognized - just being crazy.

Is there a way to REMAP every single key on the board??? So I can get this working for the customer? He only wants to keep the laptop through this school year.

DON'T WORK ON LAPTOPS THAT HAVE BEEN DROPPED OR HAD WATER DAMAGE! I can't stress this enough! The moment you touch it, EVERYTHING that goes wrong with it in the future is YOUR FAULT! If someone brings in a laptop that's been dropped, I just take it in on trade and sell it with no warranty after I "fix" it.

Yeap agree - as soon as I see water damage I take photo's and contact client. Dropped laptops may seem fine - then you open it up and things fall apart.

Perhaps the jack the keyboard plugs into is having an issue.

Well yeah I don't know if it works in windows 10 cause I havent used it in a while but the software called keytweak will allow you to remap keys. I don't know if thats every key but i think so.

Edit: if memory serves me correct think requires a reboot after changes

num-lock isn't stuck on?

Does it do it with a boot disk? PE or linux?

Like he said you should test the KB outside of Windows. Either with a live boot disk, or even just testing in the BIOS. For instance you say the right arrow key is acting like the Windows key. Jumping in the BIOS and arrowing around would tell you if the arrows are working properly. If it works in the BIOS or a live OS then it's a software issue. If it does the same thing then you have a hardware issue.

The keyboard is controlled by the keyboard controller chip or the startup chip. It depends on the model. I would think that you have a bad solder joint or trace at one of those points. Take a close look at the startup chip and if it has a keyboard controller chip. Look for a lose pin to the MB. I dont think you mentioned the model and maker of the laptop - or I didnt see it here in the thread.
