Victims of the CoinVault ransomware might be able to decrypt their files with a free tool released by Kaspersky Lab together with the Dutch police.

The tool isn’t 100 percent effective, but, as the investigation advances, the police hope to discover new keys and improve the tool’s success rate, said Kaspersky researcher Jornt van der Wiel.

I just had a customer get his files scrambled. His last backup was made by me about 6 months ago.

Pretty sad when the cops get hit and can't do a freaking thing about it. The police in Maine actually coughed up the ransom.

It's always good to check with Shadow Explorer and Photorec, even though encrypting trojans often delete the restore points. If an A/V interfered with the process or the author of the trojan was sloppy, you might have a chance at getting some of the files back.

Was at a customer in Tewksbury MA last week. He said their PD just got hit and they paid the ransom as well.
