I don't know of any instances where you need a replacement of a specific make or model, just make sure it has the correct interface: IDE vs. SATA. I think some of the high-capacity laptop drives are slightly too thick to fit in some laptops, but there's no such problem with desktops. When in doubt, take the old one with you when you buy the new. I'd probably recommend a Seagate for a desktop - nice 5 year warranty, and a good, reliable drive.
