Do hard drives have to be compatible with the other hardware...or can i just buy any brand, speed..etc and put it in?

Im thinking that they dont but im not sure.

Thx.

I don't know of any instances where you need a replacement of a specific make or model, just make sure it has the correct interface: IDE vs. SATA. I think some of the high-capacity laptop drives are slightly too thick to fit in some laptops, but there's no such problem with desktops. When in doubt, take the old one with you when you buy the new. I'd probably recommend a Seagate for a desktop - nice 5 year warranty, and a good, reliable drive.

yeah the one on my old computer was a maxtor i found a seagate with simiar specs just faster rpm.

Im not too worried about size i just really needed the to put the Os on that comps its for my lil cousins id rather them not mess with my computer.

Thx

tiddle to save time if u find another drive the same size or bigger then ur current hdd just clone ur install that way its safe and ur cousings can use the clone or the original then u clone it back later. that way u dont need to mess around installing windows again then getting drivers and antivirus because its all stuff u should already have

The only things that really have compatibility issues would the IDE or SATA and then occasionally size some BIOS/Chipsets have a hard time over a certain size limit. The only other time to match things up would be to me in a RAID setup I like to keep all drives the same.

The only reason i can think of that would require a hard drive of a specific size or model would be in the case of a raid system.

If you don't know already, Seagate is reducing their warranty term from 5 years to 3 years for not enterprise hard drives. It seems they will be matching their Maxtor warranty products.
