Issue with XP and Workgroup Shares

I was at a client site today and there are 2 XP Pro machines SP3. They are a part of the same workgroup (MSHOME). The first machine (Karen) can map a drive to the second machine (Charlene). However Charlene cannot map a drive to Karen. I can ping between them (going both ways). There is a linksys router connecting them.

Do you get any error messages when trying to map the drive? I'd first make sure the folder to be shared on Charlene is indeed shared and if so, check permissions for both the folder and the sharing permissions. Also, make sure 'file and print sharing' is installed under the network connection properties on Charlene.

Check that all the computers have the "client for Microsoft networks" installed and that file & print sharing is enabled.

Are there any error messages that are given?
Have you checked your NTFS permissions?

can you connect by \\ip\sharename ?

EDIT:
Took to long to submit my entry, sorry about the duplicate question, lol

The error is path cannot not be found...I tried to map it by ip address.

Yes the permissions are there. I made the share set to everyone.

I don't see the other computer under MSHOME (hence why I can't map the drive).

Are any firewalls installed or previously installed. If that is / was the case, you might want to try running a remover program. ie zone alarm remover

Check the firewall, check that there are no miss spellings in the work group name. Also check to make sure that the TCP\IP settings are correct on both machines. Is file sharing turned on?

Just because you can't see (browse) for the share does not mean you cannot map it. Try typing in the share address instead of browsing when you select "Map Network Drive" from Explorer. The syntax is shown right under the input box.

when it says 'network path not found' that means that some setting is not enabled or correct permissions are not given...........

I did try typing \\192.168.1.101\shareddocs thats when I get the network path not found.

Thanks for the tips...I will make sure that the permissions are there. I may create another user and give that user admin rights to the share. I am also going to check to make sure that the Computer Browser and Workstation services are running.

Issue resolved:
You guys were right...it was the File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Network. It was checked but there was a shade of gray around it. I unchecked the box and then rechecked the box and like magic it worked. I was able to see the shares. Now the issue is when the laptop is rebooted - the file and print sharing goes back to being unchecked. I gave the client procedures how to re-check the box until I can figure out the issue.
