Is this a faulty keyboard?

A client brought a laptop in earlier today because he thought he might have a virus. He bought it second hand from a friend's pawnshop and the friend recovered it back to factory settings using the recovery disk before he sold it.

Well, when I started examining the computer it appeared fine, until I tried to type something. When I tried typing something, windows would open and minimize and other strange things. So, I opened the on screen keyboard to see what was going on, and I found out when you hit the space bar, the shift keys become active and they dont become inactive until you hit the right shift key. When I use a USB keyboard, the problem doesnt occur. I've tried disconnecting the onboard keyboard and reconnecting it but that doesnt help.

My question is, is the keyboard itsself to blame, or could there possibly be something wrong with the mainboard? Has anybody else come across a similar problem?

Try this...

Try uninstalling keyboard through device manager. Make sure you have an up to date driver from manufacturer, reboot and install keyboard. Or ask if the client spilled something on the laptop.

I had a similar problem with an old P4 and it turned out to be the ps2 port was shot, it seemed like someone at the office had overstretched the lead and in doing that they loosened the ps2 port.
i cured the problem by selling them a usb keyboard and mouse set :D:D:D

everyones a winner.

A laptop keyboard will not have any pins that can get bent. It's either going to be damage to the keyboard membrane as can be caused by liquid spillage or the ribbon cable is cracked. Either way a replacement keyboard is the only viable repair.

Well, I went ahead and ordered a new keyboard for under 20 bucks off of ebay. It's coming from hong kong so hopefully the keys arent made out of cardboard or something, but I'll post an update when I get it.

Thank you for all your helpful answers!

try use an external KB to test the laptop.
If everything works, you may need to replace the onboard KB.

If still the same problem, check if any other method of input character application is current active. Or the mainboard KB controller is faulty.
