iPad to new PC sync

I think that refers specifically to content bought from itunes, to prevent iDevices syncing with different libraries.
I am pretty sure you can configure iTunes not to sync, then plug in the iPad and maka a backup.

OK so I followed this process:

installed iTunes on new PC
started iTunes
clicked edit preferences, device, tickt prevent itunes from auto syncing
connected iPad
clicked store, authorise this computer
right clicked on device. clicked transfer purchases from this device
once completed I checked apps, tv progams, films and music and they were all copied over
I then right clicked on iPad and selected backup
then right clicked on device and select restore
once finished i checked the apps, films, music was synced which they were.
However at this point the photos are not synced. I can see the photos in camera roll via explorer but not the other albums.
When I go back and click on Edit / Preferences / Devices and un-check the box next to Prevent your iPod etc I get the message:
"The iPad "ipad name" is synced with another iTunes library. Do you want to erase this iPad and sync with this iTunes library?
An iPad can be synced with only one iTunes library at a time. Erasing and syncing replaces the contents of this iPad with the contents of this iTunes library."
and two click options "Erase and Sync" or "Cancel"
If I click erase and sync nothing really happens evberything stays on the iPad and the apps, tv progams, films and music are on the new PC.
However when I enable photo sync I get the message
"Replace the synced photos on the iPad "ipad name"?
This iPad contains photos synced with another photo library or folder. Photos and albums on "ipad name" will be replaced with photos and albums from this computer. Photos taken with "ipad name" will not be affected.
and the click option "replace photos" or "cancel"

You sure? I'm not convinced as it mentions "Transfer Camera Roll Photos" which you can do anyway just be connecting the iPad and viewing it in explorer.

EDIT: this program which is part of the same suite claims to do it for free, I'm a little hopefull now. I'll give it a test and report back:

http://www.digidna.net/products/picsaid

EDIT: I installed it and got the message "PicsAid couldn't load any pictures from your device, check there are photos on the device that have been synced with iTunes."

reading a bit more into the program it states "PicsAid will allow retrieval of all the pictures that were synced with iTunes." so the device has to already have had its photos synced with iTunes.

i had their tuneaid product which they have now merged into DiskAid, nice software, opens up a whole new world of iDevice data recovery for people who have dead hard drives on their PC and all they stuff on their iDevice.

It even does SMS messages, contacts etc

At this point I give up, remind me never to purchase one of these iPads, aside from the problems trying to transfer stuff that wasn't taken with the iPad back to the PC I just don't like it, I mean who would pay in excess of £500 for a device that does not even have a usb port...

They should have had a backup of their old PC for sure and that would have made the process easy but this is a serious failing from Apple not providing an easy way to transfer data back.

OK so DiskAid will defiantly transfer photos not already synced with the new iTunes and not in the camera roll back to the PC? There docs don't seem to suggest thats the case:

DiskAid accesses the contents of your iPhone or iPad Camera roll and lets your copy all stills and videos shots with the device or synced with iTunes to an iOS 5 device.

I suspect like other programs it will only copy your camera roll over.

i wouldnt pay in excess of £500 either, my ipad 2 was £379.

I dont see how they have 600 photos on their ipad that they have NEVER synced, but hey I dont have the device in my hands.

Did you even download the DiskAid trial, you can access the file system direct on the iDevice.

The new iPad 3 is in excess of even £600 for some models.

They did sync 600 photos but that was to their old laptop which was stolen. I'll download the trial and see if it works.

Just installed the trial, the photos only show the camera roll, I can access the file system but I've no idea what would need to be copied to th PC to get the other photos over?

if they were synced then in DiskAid you will see a Photo Library folder within Photos off the left nav menu, in their I have a 100SYNCD folder containing all my photos NOT ones in my camera roll but ones I have taken on my phone, synced with itunes and subsequently synced with my ipad.

I have that folder and the 100SYNCD folder but it's empty. I know the photos have been synced to a previous iTunes library but not the one on the new PC. Is this where the problem is, the fact that this iPad has never been synced to the PC that DiskAid is running on.

The reason I know it's been previously synced on a different PC is it's my friends iPad I'm testing with prior to doing anything on the customers. I have his laptop and have synced the iPad to it previously. The photos are on both the iPad and his laptop, when I install iTunes on a new PC and try DiskAid this is when I have the problems.

it shouldnt matter where they were synced, just that they were.

were they syncing to a macbook?, if so its possible they were syncing with iPhoto which has the option to delete photos from device when synced. Dont think itunes does that.

time to give up..

or email 600 photos to yourself :)

i just installed itunes and diskaid on a new VM of W7, i can see my photos on the ipad within diskaid fine they dont even exist in itunes yet as im not syncing BUT i have synced my ipad to my personal laptop previously.

I just tried with my iphone on a PC that it has never been connected to, and doesn't have itunes installed and I was able to open all photos in explorer (DCIM folder) and copy to the PC.
On my laptop, I connected an iphone that is synced to a different PC and was able to transfer files over using diskaid.

Both iPhones are IOS 5.01

Weird because I'm also using a VM of W7 to test it, the only difference is I already synced with iTunes (except photos) on the VM. I wonder why DiskAid does not see the My Pictures folder on the iPad?

Are they defo the photos in 100SYNCD folder that you can see mine is empty

Ah I think I found the problem!! The test photos I used I put direct into "My Pictures" on the PC, this created a "My Pictures" folder on the iPad anything in there does not show in DiskAid.

I created a number of subfolders in My Pictures on the PC and synced and the photos now appear in DiskAid. The directory structure does not appear in DiskAid though all the photos appear in the 100SYNCD folder. Is that what you see also?
