I'm curious if this is just my client base, or are you seeing an uptick in these type of opportunities. Things like connecting Nest Thermostats, baby cameras, Amazon Echo, etc.

I'm seeing my clients with them...and horrible security. Good opportunities for me, but maybe because I'm a home automation nerd, I'm seeking them out more.

AT&T and other ISPs are advertising their own bundled solutions, which is causing my clients to ask about it.

Observer bias on my part or legitimate opportunity?

I did an Echo for a residential customer of mine last month - pretty cool. I don't know that I want to be on the hook for support for that stuff though. There hasn't been a big demand, a few Sonos setups, Roku's (not IOT, I guess) & the like. I've been meaning to pick up a Nest myself, but just haven't had the time to do it. My guess is that if you work with residential customers, you should at least know enough about these things to be conversationally adept. I'm sure that it would be best to have actual experience with them, so you should definitely buy one of each for your own house - purely for academic reasons, of course!

I've not had any consumer related stuff yet. But many businesses have expanded on this in a fashion. Several businesses I do work for have moved their apps to cloud based solutions from traditional local installations.

I'm in the process of connection my fish tank and done a clients. Using seneye.

That sounds useful - monitor ph levels? temperature? salinity?

I have a hot tub and have used several different remote thermometers over the years so I can see the temperature from inside the house. To a one, those units were all junk and rarely lasted more than one season, two at the most. I'll have to look into this!

Working on this right now, I'm in the process of partnering with Vivint to offer this type of thing to residential and commercial.

Anyone in Eastern Ontatio interested in this send me a message.

Here's a decent article about Vivint from Forbes:

Right now, no I can't. I'm a Canadian military tech full time and I'm on a tasking for the next month to assist with courseware development for Network Security Analyst course that we are revamping.

Im really thinking about taking a finding a way to make it happen though. I know people in the area and it's only a couple hrs drive for me in Kingston.

Going to the Unconvention since it is somewhat local to you?

For Amazon Prime day there was a $50 off deal on an Echo. I picked up one and set it up in the showroom connected to a light controller. I put a flyer with some of the commands for clients to mess around with the Echo. My thought process was to help introduce people to new technology and figured this might be a good stepping stone for users.
