I have a pc here that I am sure has a virus, as limewire and utorrent are on here and this person does not seem very tech savy when it comes to virus protection (the avg has not been updated in 6 months)

The problem is that when i boot it into either safe mode or normal mode the internet doesnt work.

When I hover over the icon with the 2 screens and a red X it says that "The dependency service or group has failed to start"

When I check the device manager it says that under network adapters, the intel pro/100 is working fine but there is a yellow mark on something called "Microsoft Tun Miniport Adapter #2"
Device status is: The device can not start (code 10)

I am trying to get to the internet so that I can update malwarebytes and run a scan..

Any ideas?

I'd probably first attempt for a manual virus removal, use process explorer and autoruns or even TN's killbat to find things out of the ordinary, (helps to cut off a virus's head before attempting to fix the damage it caused so that it doesn't undo your fixes).

Once your pretty confident the virus isn't running, I'd check the winsocks just to be safe then get your windows disk ready, and do a sfc /scannow
it sounds to me like the virus destroyed one of the critical components for accessing the internet, sfc should repair the files.

Thanks for the reply, I finally got malwarebytes on there, ran a scan and removed 285 infected files.
i am finally able to run sfc /scannow through windows, i am seeing how that is going to go.

What is TN's killbat? Is that the kill running processes batch file?

yeah the kill processes bat file is what I was reffering to, always obnoxious when you fix the setting it changed and the virus is still running so it undoes your work. You got malware bytes so 80% chance you've killed the virus, but always check process explorer and autoruns on your own,

if your unsure with processes if and doubt kill it, worse case scenerio you killed something important and have to reboot, I don't believe there's any way to do long term damage by killing a process.

with both process explorer and autoruns, look very closely at everything without a publisher name next to it.

Scanners are great, and they catch the areas that you don't have time to look in, but sometimes you'll find a virus slip through 5+ programs, that's just sitting in plain site in startup with a filename like 12212312.exe or some crap.

The error "The dependency service or group has failed to start" is sadly all to common and there are about a thousand different suggested fixes, maybe you'll get lucky and find which works for you but I can suggest a few steps that may workout better than most suggested...

First checkout BlackViper.com and download (from another pc obviously) the reg files that are the default for the OS you are working on and merge it with the problem system and then reboot, next run WinSock Fix (newer version that supports Vista and not JUST XP) or the Zero Point Networking app then reboot again and see where you are with things. Both the mentioned apps were somewhat recently discussed by the way.
