Info on everyone.net?

Hi,

I started seeing an occasional balloon come up in the bottom right of my screen that says something like "checking 216.200.xx.xx.everyone.net". Not knowing what this was, I did some research and found that everyone.net is an email hosting service.

It's apparently legit, except I don't know how it got here. I don't see it in the Add/Remove programs list; I can't identify it in the services list; it doesn't show up as a Mozilla plug-in; it's not in the startup program list; there are no registry entries for it... What is it? Where is it? Google searches get me info about what it is, but not how to uninstall it. I'd like to turn it off. I don't know that it's doing any harm, but I don't want anything on my computer that I didn't put there. I have enough junk as it is.

Any info or pointers?
Thanks,
Randy

If you dont know how it got there I would think that this is a very bad thing. Why do you say "it is legit". Do you know what it is doing ?

To NYJimbo: by "legit" I mean that everyone.net is a real service and not spyware or malware of some type - I think.

To PatrickB: You raise a good point. I will look into that. My ISP has undergone some ownership changes in the last year, and they may well have started using everyone.net to host their email service. It's a possibility, anyway.

Thanks for the replies,
Randy

Make sure that this thing should be running, just because its a valid email service doesnt mean it should be on your machine. Are you a tech or an end-user?.

I would think if your email is now being outsourced you would have noticed a change or installed something, unless you are using proprietary software your ISP gave you which might autoupdate and not notify you of changes.
