That is a perfect example of so many web design jobs. It's the reason I will not do complex sites anymore and just hand them off to designers I know and then I get a little piece of the action.
The worst part is when you go from designer to the idiot typing on the keyboard as the client "designs" the site. I actually abandoned a job and refunded all the money to a client who was driving me nuts. She would make changes and then hate the changes and made new ones, but it was all her design. I was just doing the coding in the end and we had to have daily phone chats so she could whine about how bad the site looked. When I told her it was not working out she said "Ok, then just give me back my money and I will go find someone who can get the job done!". I asked her what was the quickest way I could refund her and then she changed her mind and begged me to continue. I told her it was never going to get completed and I would just eat the cost so far and she would get all her money back.
I sent her a full refund via paypal and cut off all communication with her. Months later she still has not started the project with anyone else and her domain still points to our dns servers.
