I have just recieved my ide/sata usb connector from a good dealer on ebay.
I have tested the product on my internal dvd drive and it burned out, not happy, tried it on my sata hard drive, now that is knackered, had all my tech stuff on, now i am fumming, does anybody know this has happened, it is a good job that was not a customers computer.

Ouch, that is a hard one to take mate sorry!

I had an external 2.5 connector do that to one of my customers drives last year and only 6 months ago a brand new PSU melted inside a customers unit and nearly set fire to my workshop, I'm just glad I was in when it happened.
I was not a happy chappy and the suppliers response was "thats why you have insurance" needless to say I have not purchased anything from them since.

The power adapters that come with those are ultra cheap. That would be my first guess.

I have one that I've got off Newegg.com that I've used on about 20 computers and have never had a problem. Sounds like you just got a bad, cheap brand. What brand was the one you got?

The problem I found when researching is none of the ones I could find were very good quality. Most of the "brands" you see are resellers. They buy something in bulk, slap their name on it, and then sell it. You can't find one with universally good reviews. The problem is the power adapters are not consistent even within the same brand/model. Just look at the reviews on Newegg for all of them. The majority will be good, but then a considerable percent will complain about cheap power adapters.

Your only real option is to buy one with the best reviews you can find, and then test the adapter with a multimeter before using on a drive. If it reads good on the meter you can try it on a junk drive.

If anyone cares this is the one I bought:

ive got 2 of these cheap adapters lol... i got mine for like $6USD never had any probs tho. im gunna def go with the power adapter with the one u got musthave been pretty dodgy

i know! i just buy them at fry's

never had problems with'em before.. ??

but now that i read THIS, i guess i'll just stick to the major name-brands... :(

Sorry about your luck. I have a Cables to Go unit I have been using for over a year. I purchased it from Tiger. I thought about getting a cheaper one but it seems when ever I go cheaper that is what I get. :(

update: got a refund yestaday, funny thing about all this is they never questioned the refund or asked for the producted back, very strange, what to people think, i will never buy another one as i cant afford to take the risk to a customers drive, will just use my old computer.
