I got my hands on this laptop "It was given to me by my friend". The original problem with the LCD, it will never turn on , but for some odd reason I was out side and I tried to power the laptop on then I saw that its alive , I was able to see the background! It was very dim and I tried everything.
  • Power settings
  • looking in the bios if there is anything related
  • remover battery ,memory left the laptop for 24hrs to discharge
  • Re-flashed bios with updated one from HP site
  • Tested AC adaptor

Everything checked out to be fine! So I finally decided that it’s the backlight inverter so after ordering a new one and I replace it. The LCD works fine, but only if I was using the AC adaptor, and as soon as I un plug it the screen will go black again! And if I plug the power again it will not come back on unless I :
  • log off and log in again
  • shutdown the laptop and power it on again

I noticed when doing the second option and if I was still using the battery, when the laptop boots I will show the screen normal for a moment then goes black again.

I really don’t know what the do else, so I am look for your expert opinions. I am open to any suggestion. I will hate to disassemble the laptop again and start tracing each circuit with a volt-Metter

Does it have an ATI video card? I've read about computers that have the ATI x1400 video card I think that have this exact problem.

It sounds like it's an operating system/drivers issue, because logging off and back on fixes the problem.

You think?! it was doing it in XP and now its doing it with Vista?

I am leaning more to HW issue because when it is up an running and as soon as i unplug AC adapter, the screen die , I just can't pin-point what to change?!

Well the problem with the ATI x1400 cards was a feature called powerplay in the drivers. Powerplay controlled power settings. When plugged in or unplugged they have different settings controlled by the software.

If it does the same thing under both Vista and XP as you say, it's less likely to be software unless they use the same software for both OS.

In that case, I don't know, sorry.

It went completely dead on the week end. I can still use an external monitor!

I start to believe that i got a bad inverter to begin with. will see if i can get a replacement.
