HP G60 woes

6 months ago I got an hp g60 in the shop...problem was that it would not turn on, nothing on the screen, etc.

Come to find out that one of the ram slots on the computer was bad. It had 4gb of ram, and i tried both sticks in each slot and only one slot worked correctly.

She brings it back with essentially the same issue. It turns on, you can hear the fan spinning, however there is nothing on the display, no back image, no flickering, nothing. I took all the ram out and it does the same thing but the power light flashes, but its still turned on. I tried hooking it to an external monitor and I get nothing.

I have taken out the hard drives and the dvd drive, as I read somewhere that this could have been the problem, i didnt see how, but hey it was worth a try.

I am beginning to think that the graphics chip has over heated as while this thing sets the fans slowly work themselves up to what sounds like max speed.

I am leaning on a bad motherboard as it would not surprise me with HP....just wonder what others think?

ps - I just pulled it somewhat apart and tested with a multimeter the lcd cable and it is putting power to the lcd inverter, all other points i tested seem to be consistent with power, could this be a processor??? After listening to this thing for some time, I have noticed that it keeps trying to cue the dvd rom, fan steps up a bit...i am thinking either over heated processor or graphics chip...

I have never seen a processor go bad though, I am aware that they can, but just have not seen one...

This is easy and it works, and I do it all the time ( I own one :D)

Pull the battery and power supply out and hold the power button for 30 seconds, then in order, put just the battery in and hit the power button, it should turn on.

As a matter of fact this morning I did the same thing for a customer with a G60, who had the same symptoms and it work like a charm!

The first time my g60 did this, I too, took it apart, just to find out that I didn't have to!

I have found this works on quite a few machines which didn't look like they were working.
If I ever get a machine in that looks DOA I try this out first. :D

I tried the above and it didnt do anything different. I think there is an issue with the motherboard/gpu because there is nothing on the display, even when I hook it up to an external monitor, my monitor sees i plugged something in, but I am hitting the FN + F4 and it doesnt seem to be doing anything..

I would then reseat everything, especially the monitor ribbon cable, the G60 has a lot of flex to it, especially if the person has a tendency to pick it up by the front corner only.

Well I just took out the ram, cd player, battery, HD, wifi card, and disconnected the lcd cable from the mobo along with the cmos battery. I then put the essentials in, hard drive and ram, plugged in an external monitor, plugged the dc jack in and turned it on and I still get no video on the external monitor. Since there is no video on the external, I would assume it would be time wasting to check out the connection on the back of the lcd monitor correct??

I have the same issue with a G60 laptop as well. I believe the video chip went bad using the same symptoms you described so I purchased another board from fleabay. This gave the same result, thinking I misdiagnosed the problem I tried different cpu and memory with the same result. is it possible I just got another bad board because it seems so many do the same thing?

Just had a HP G60 in for work and exact same issues as explained in this thread. I guess this laptop is a victim of the nVidia defect?
