HP bringing Windows 7 back!

I just got some junk email from HP. I normally get them once or twice a week. The title however grabbed my attention. "HP bringing back Windows 7 by popular demand." They proceed with a list of consumer laptops, Desktops and All In Ones. So it isn't just for businees users like the Win 8 to Win 7 downgrade.

How many other will follow suit with new PCs that have Win 7 instead of 8?

I thought I read somewhere that MS was cutting off Win7 for OEM's? I could be wrong but I swear I either read this or heard it on a podcast.

Windows 7 cut off for OEM is October 2014. It may change given their new view on Windows 8. MS has admitted failure on Win 8, and publicly said they want to cut their losses.

Where? I've not seen that. You've seen some RUMORS put out by Paul Thurrott but I've not seen any public admission of anything. It is jumping the gun to say that Microsoft has "given up" on Windows 8.

I think the bottom line is that MS really screwed up with Win8. Win XP is ending support, Vista is dead, they want to kill off Win7 for some reason and now are realizing that their customers don't want Win8 (doesn't matter if we techs can deal with it) and they having nothing to turn to.

I think MS will have to find a face-saving way of pretending that people really like Win7 and that's why they are going to extend support for a couple years, and probably put out a SP2 , until they can figure out what Windows 9 is supposed to be.

Agreed. They'll be trying to stop the hemorrhaging until they can get Windows 9 out the door. I suspect the amount of pressure they're getting from OEMs like HP and Dell will help to extend the life of Windows 7.

So I foresee Microsoft rushing windows 9 into the world.
Oh great
Just what we need, a rushed ill conceived mess.

windows 7 is the new xp while 8 is the new vista.

I don't think there's a day in my life that I don't think of this exact statement. However, I'm hopeful for Windows 9 (if they don't rush it) because if the pattern continues:

Windows XP: Good
Windows Vista: Terrible
Windows 7: Great
Windows 8: Pretty darn bad
Windows 9: ??? Awesome???

You know, the real shame of it all is that the majority of users (especially business users), will eventually have to swallow whatever MS decides to do. In most cases there are no other options. I wonder how "great" the next version of Windows would be if MS had some serious competition, and were actually forced to compete for market share?

Say what you will about Bill Gates, his creation of a virtual MS monopoly was indeed quite shrewd and profitable. It may start to crack if Apple decides to get serious about it, or when SaaS evolves significantly, but that may be awhile. Until then, it is what it is......and that's whatever MS decides it should be.

p.s. Long live FOSS! :D

It's a shame that M$ can't FIX their O/S's and stay with a version/release until it is fixed and works properly (for everyone). Of course we would all need to be running the exact same hardware (reminds me of the old MAC/Apple days) in order for them to get it right!

They should just do some re-configuring.

Windows 8 - rename it 'Windows Tablet' and market it as such. for tablets only

Windows 7 - Add some of the touchscreen functionality of Win8 to it, bring back the start menu/button, and market it as a dual function 'Windows 9' for pc's and laptops w/touchscreen.

You can extend this backwards too!

Windows 98: Good
Windows ME: Sucked

From DOS 6.22 to Win 98SE. They were all pretty good, and well adopted. ME was the first real terribly unstable OS. Kernel faults were fun. The Netscape Navigator missing .exe on Win 95 was one that I had to fix sooo many times. Since then it has been 50/50.
